the truth is in cory booker's rhetoric matched reality of cory booker, he would indeed be the next unitedtates senator from new jersey. i don't believe he will because like president obama he doesn't actually like to governor. so the city can't borrow money against a new water system. unemployment is higher than national average when you have the economic powerhouse of new york across the street. he laid off 162 police officers as one of his first acts and closed three firestations which might explain why he has to rush into buildings to save people. he couldn't clear the streets of snow so he decided to go out and shovel the snow himself. look, he is head of a failed city. spends more than half his time outside of newark. he's earned over a million dollars in speeches giving 90 peach speeches in 32 different states as reported by his local paper. cory booker i started covering him ten years ago when i got to new jersey. was somebody marked for a national future. talking about him as a national prospect. jamelle, it strike me that if he goes to the senate this year in 2013, i look at the sort of african-american turnout, we talked about the issue of the democratic coalition showing up only in presidential years, and looked last year at we've had studies since the election, looked at african-american turnout, how it was energized in 2012, bigger share of the elect electorate than people expecting. there's a question, how important is it for democrats in 2016 to have a nonwhite presence on the ticket? the pipeline of the democratic party, when it comes to the nonwhite pipeline. if cory booker gets to the senate in 2013, vp in 2016, is that something that's on the horizon? >> i'm not sure if it's on the horizon. if you're trying to keep black turnout high, i'm sort of on the side of people who think that black turnout will stay high indefinitely. when you look at the trend for black turnout going back 15

cory booker is poised and ready, as they say.rkable, by the way, we are talking about a black candidate as a sure thing. i don't know if i lived long enough to see this day. >> fair point. this is just where we are politically in the state of new jersey. maddie, chris christie is he going to pay any price among conservatives? i would argue how everything about this, the timetable that he set basically benefits one guy and it's cory booker who has been very politically helpful to chris christie over the years. >> we are talking about the appetite for a young democrat. i think on the republican side it is refreshing for a lot of folks to see christie join hands with obama and his amicable relationship i think with other democrats helps him. the focus for christie everyone is talking about 2016 and i think we are too far out ho say a certain attitude towards him given what we have seen recently are folks on both sides of the issue whether or not his bipartisan helps him or not, i think still too early to tell if that works in 2016.

the sort of back and forth he had lately with cory booker over whether or not corey booker was running with his blessing for the democratic seat he was vacating. one of the last things we discussed vis-a-vis frank lawsuitsenberg. i want to ask you, glen, as far as the sort of political dimension of all of this, the senate and a lot of, a lot of discussion in some corners about whether or not, whether or not democrats can hold on to their six-seat majority. we know there was a piece in the "new york times" last week discussing south dakota, west virginia and montana, where democratic incumbents are retiring. and arkansas, alaska and louisiana, where democrats are in a tough, tough fight. i wonder how much you think this changes the dynamics? how much this is something that needs to be considered in the broader strategy for 2014? >> well for one thing i think it's sort of an extension political moment for governor christie. who could theoretically go way out of the box and choose corey booker to serve out the term. that's a possibility, he's certainly been embraced. >> and win a bear for

we'll play a little bit of "meet the press," cory booker. cory booker has issued a statement today. but on me"meet the press," he w not so patient in pushing lautenberg to announce his retirement. let's play a little bit of that with david gregory not too long ago. >> the idea that you've not worked out with senator lautenberg what his plans are. any missteps in terms of that? >> this is really early. we reached out with him, we had a trip down here to speak with him, but he wasn't able to speak. right now the senator who i support needs to focus on the debt ceiling, focus on funding for sandy. i have two good senators in the senate, we're going to support that. >> chris cillizza, it was an unseemly by many accounts, unseemly push to try to get lautenberg to announce his retirement. >> well cory booker may have not seen anything there. but we know for a fact because he sort of referenced it publicly, that frank lautenberg did feel in fact that cory booker, the mayor of new york, widely seen as a rising star, he took a pass on running against christie. making clear his intention to r

booker's appeal, and cory booker from a majority black city. interesting thing about it, he is more popular outside the city of newark than inside the city. the base is the suburbs, a long-serving congressman named donald payne, that would talk about thinking about running for higher office and democratic office will say, you know, we won't run donald payne, he's not electable. cory booker is different. >> he went for the constituency, the counts, which is wall street, in addition to african-americans. so he's very strategic in the way he's risen and that puts him in a special category. >> he's hedge funders candidate candidate, and this is a guy who was one of the people who came out in front and said don't criticize mitt romney for being a -- >> it was on "meet the press" during the 2012 -- >> this is where his backing comes from, wall street. this is as much of a wall street candidate as everyone and that's why he has that broad support. it really comes from the wealth. >> booker, a little broader, look at afirmtive action, and i think in th
