and the optimism comes from the fact that senators cory booker on the democratic side and senator tim scott on the republican side along with karen bass have been holding informal negotiations for several weeks now. and there is optimism to be found in that despite the fact that there are some points that are still sticky and need to be compromised on. but on the side of pessimism, there is the reality that there has been a push for policing overhaul on the federal front since 2014 in the shooting of michael brown after his shooting in ferguson, missouri. seven years later, we're still hearing congress waiting to see if that reform is finally going to come. there is a conversation right now though around the george floyd justice and policing act. you know it passed the house. it won't be going anywhere in the senate at least in the form that it is in right now. the sticking points though, chief among them, are things like qualified immunity, which roek protects officers from being sued in civil court. democrats say that that is important getting rid of it is holding cops accountable.
