cory johnson is in new york with more on why facebook is making this move. ry, this is a long-awaited move. we have been talking about this for months, why now? >> there are 44 billion reasons facebook is doing that. they want that video advertising. if you look at everything that has gone on with facebook over the last year, with a stock chart really reflects is optimism that they will figure out new ways to gain revenue at their user growth slows down. fundamentally, the way these video ads will work, i think they will sell them as a high ticket item. one day possible so that will garner as much as $1 million-$2 million in revenue for faith. it is a 15 second ad. we will get a much more measured response than television ads typically received. they will know who is looking at the ads and they will know something about that user. >> let's take a look at how facebook's ad revenue has grown since its ipo. mobile has become a bigger piece of the pie. how does this change things? >> facebook ad revenue was $1.8 million in the last quarter. that is an incredibly

class cory johnson, jump inr here. drivers and passengers should be completely safe and not going out on the road and putting their lives at risk. is there a better way than this? >> this is what everyone is saying off the air, i do not care about people, i only care about business. that on air.aying but i think this is an interesting choice for the business to make. let me bring an example of uberne who could afford on right. jessica seinfeld, the wife of jerry seinfeld, she paid $415 in an uber fair to bring her case to a bar mitzvah and drop her caps off. her kids were saying things like, oh my god, these people are crooks. it is a calculated risk that the business is taking. are presenting a fixed price, and you know what this is false. a mcdonald's value meal is $.99 and you know you are getting. we will not change the price if you are more hungry. that is one enjoys a business can make. the use of this technology allows uber to scale production instantly in a time like a big snowstorm. there is a risk on the back

cory johnson, editor-at- large, thank you. i want to bring in michelle she focuses one cyber and government transparency issues like the foreign surveillance act. she joins us from washington, d.c. it a little ironic given that many of the technology companies have been cooperating? is this just political posturing? >> we have been debating privacy since 9/11 nine years ago. this is really the first time they are weighing in and saying the government has gone too far. >> except for the fact that they have a lot braided if the government in certain cases, right? >> right. i think what prompted the new movement is the recent revelation that they are not just serving the companies with court orders that hacking into the system overseas where the laws do not apply. it might have been what pushed them over the edge to get involved. >> the people who run the companies are powerful. they account for a large part of the united states economy. how is the government likely to respond? >> this as a whole new voice to the privacy debate.

cory johnson spoke with cofounders. asking why they wanted to create a new karaoke machine. >> it is a last frontier in music gaming. it hasn't changed that much as it came out. both of us can't sing very well so we discovered this technology doing singing live. we just knew that this was the future. >> how does it work? >> it is live vocal processing technology that the professionals use. we adapted to consumer use. the technology is very complex. even if you can't sing well, it makes you sound good. >> in terms of inventing this thing, what is the real innovation? what is the thing that's new? >> the thing that is new is that we have never used something of such high quality. there is over 350 sounds that you can use and different effects. it is very high quality. >> how does it work? we have one person sings and then it harmonizes up a fifth and down a fifth. >> it has every commendation of harmony. >> how does that work with the voice? >> when you play music, it listens to the song and knows what key it is in. it tu

cory johnson also with us from new york. ry and i had a conversation with an uber investor yesterday, and i have never seen so much the enemy and -- so much the him ently outragedem twitter responses. ricedo you think of uber's policy and is it fair? central question is for a non-central service, in america, where you set the -- the market sets the right, should there really be a constraint to price when there is high demand? many industries do this, for instance, airline, hotel, car most major league baseball teams are doing this, so i see no problem with uber setting price according to the market, and what is one of the most important things is that this is a nonessential service, it is not like everyone is entitled to a black car. customers have a lot of next best alternatives. bus, they canthe try to hail a taxi, they can actually wait because uber's search goes up and down, almost by the minute, or they could simply walk. i have a new problem with a for profit company said it price equivalent to what the market will pay.

our editor-at-large, cory johnson, is in new york. this,o you make of someone inside microsoft participating in insider trading? this guy jorgensen was a certified financial analyst, and his job was to analyze likely market impact of coming microsoft announcements. was to do sensitivity analysis to figure out what would happen with microsoft stock price. sec alleges he had a joint brokerage account with somebody else, and that i would make these trades, and their goal was to open their own hedge fund with these games. they get caught in the process. >> we talk about insider trading a lot. how common is something like this, really? >> insider trading may be very common. what we know in terms of statistics is that when the sec goes after these things -- when i was a money manager, you would see some things that were egregious. the number of sec prosecutions of insider trading have fallen quite a bit trip they only prosecuted 44 cases in the last fiscal year. -- bit. they only prosecuted 44 cases in the last fiscal year. we can look at t

i'm cory johnson. consortium created by several companies to acquire patents from nortel networks is 2011 is now trying to unload some of them. they recently held conversations to sell a portion of the portfolio that includes 4000 patents ranging from internet technology chips. according to people with knowledge of the plans -- why is rockstar getting out of the patents? why did they overpay for them or did they overpay at all? i'm joined by david martin, the founder and ceo of a company that -- you have been predicting something like this since the day i met you. why? >> it's always funny because you will recall after some of our early conversations, a number of people said we grossly misrepresented how much overpaying had happened on the rockstar portfolio, just like we talked about the overpaying that google paid on the motorola portfolio. the reason why there's a dispute between our view and the consensus view is we looked look at the actual patents themselves. the problem rockstar has is that ther

. >> welcome back, i am cory johnson. this is "bloomberg west." .etflix has been a big year they had critical shows that won a slew of awards and they continue to add subscribers. the company is making some big changes altering its pricing and losing some favorite shows and movies. jon erlichman has more. these changes are not small. doing a lot of stuff. the last couple of days, people have been talking about some of the top performing stocks of the year. netflix is near the top of that list. a lot of that has to do with the subscriber growth. that number really drives the revenue story and continues to climb and it stands at about 40 million. a lot of the moves they're working on our hide to growing that number. there is the tide shaanxi or the idea of purging some titles where the licenses are expiring. aboutall ultimately getting more members longer- term. let's talk about this purging of some titles. there's been some press about this is your last chance to watch "titanic" or cory johnson's favorite movie, "top gun."
