cory johnson joins us now onset. cory: investors will have a chance to own a piece of tender.is interesting it is taking these businesses, which they lumped together and package them into an ipo. one of the reasons the stock is this investors recognize will probably get a bigger valuation as a separate company principally because of the characteristics of the business. it has only been a year and a half. talk to us about the timing of this. put this together long enough and what we have seen is a business growing really fast. it is a big is this. but we arerise you, looking at a business that is doing well over two injured million in revenues last corner -- last quarter. onwing pretty well at a year year basis. a billion dollar a year topline business. in terms of the growth, come here often? but yes, the year-over-year growth rate, you saw that came off last quarter. interestingly, in the last quarter of the company, they have invested in the businesses big time. have declined substantially in the business, particularly in the last quarter. some of that is currencies as well.

cory johnson is able to give you the details, but as a shareholder, i could not be happier with whathey are doing. alix: do you own it for value or growth? >> it has 13 times earnings and with a mountain of cash that they have, it is a value stock. but they are trading in a growth custom, they grow faster than others. it is a good deal. alix: what about banks, we have heard talk about potential layoffs. just in the last year, jpmorgan and we are hearing more numbers on top of that, why are banks -- how are banks making money? cut 17,000, but they have hired lawyers. of pressure on these institutions, they have margins coming down, because they have to hold more capital. some of these things are good, some silly, but it is reality. toh that reality, they have screw down the expense structure and that is what they are doing. when rates go up, maybe in september, they will make more money. right now, they are probably trying to make money a few years out when rates go up. alix: we are talking about 25 basis points. >> they will make what they are making. that is pretty probable. alix: w

hour,in the next bloomberg's cory johnson will interview the ceo. what is the burning desire?is the question you want to know? i don't want to give it away in case the intel folks -- they have done some big deals in the past and one of the things that's difficult for intel is to take their giant manufacturing prowess and put other stuff through their factory. that something taiwan semi conductor was built to do. great chips and don't have to worry themselves with the manufacture of these chips. now they can make an altera chip even better than taiwan semi conductor. they should know this stuff better than just about anybody. those cost-benefits -- why is the manufacturing progress going to show great skill when it hasn't always in the past? we have seen apple and samsung -- they have built out their service -- their server operations. deduced?the price cory: they talked about the ability to create some new products, where you have altera theting the capacity, that intel chips already have. the notion of new products that and wide openle for computing power on the intel level i

cory johnson in san francisco. give us your take on this.: it's a big change for intel to do a deal to acquire a fellow chipmaker. all these countries are very different. these have significant differences. it's the biggest deal intel has ever done. the deals of and around issues of security and software, not focusing on actual chipmaking. but that's with altera. mark: what does this mean in terms of how the chipmakers and tech companies feel about their growth prospects going forward. do they have the merge to get to growth? if you're going on the bullish, bearish sentiments, it's bearish. they have these huge cast piles -- cash piles, but they have been unable to break into the markets where altera has been. to really achieve significant revenue growth, they will have to buy that revenue growth. they will get earnings growth as well. they are paying a lot to get that. ist's interesting to me there are synergies here. they think that altera design chips on the same platform as an intel chip might lead to something altogether new. they talke

olivia: i want to bring in cory johnson who is joining me now from san francisco. your take on the deal? -- the think intel markets they will be addressing our markets were intel has not always been strong will give them more to sell. intel has had a presence in the data center. in telecom equipment, they've been pretty weak. in mobile, to the degree that altera is there, that is beneficial to them as well. i think it is interesting from a technological stat. these are dumber chips than intel is accustomed to making further down the chain. this puts them in different businesses they have not been in before. they have the high-margin, high-end chipset of gone into pcs and data centers. not so much the chips designed for individual tasks such as automotive, military and so on. olivia: body think intel shares are trading down today? cory: they are spending boatloads of money. mergers we arehe seeing are accretive to earnings. from a financial perspective, they're buying revenues and buying earnings growth because it is harder to come by in the economy now. theiries tr
