so, we borrowed church's copy of cosmos.derstanding that church owned a number of humboldt's books. they were things he cherished, he thumbed through, he would market passage or two. we know it was something that really mattered. when church paints the heart of the andes, he is basing it on an infographic that humboldt had created right after coming back from his trip to the americas. that is called is plant geography map. that is what is in the case in the middle of the room. it is half-watercolor, half-data, beautifully engraved, hand colored, really magnificent. this would have been folded up and placed in a sleeve in the back of his very first book. done is spectacular. you go from sea level all the way to the top, but all of the latin plant names in here are shown at the altitude at which humboldt found them. the data on the sides is temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, altitude, how deep blue the color of the sky was, comparative data from other places and characteristic plants. this is the template for the unit
