i didn't subscribe or read cosmo. it felt way too old for me as a 15-year-old and also scandalous because there was a lot of cover lines about sex which made me a bit uncomfortable. [laughter] and i read other magazines, but i was aware of her; and i was aware she was a famous editor, longtime editor of cosmo. i think by the time i started paying attention to cosmo, she was -- the editor was bonnie fuller who, i believe, came right after helen left. >> yes. >> and bonnie changed it in a way, i think it became even more, you know, provocative and i would say maybe salacious, and maybe it was dumbed down a little bit more. i didn't have any interest in it then as a reader much as well. it's funny, though, because when we -- in 2007 when we were spending four months, some staffers and i, trying to think about how we were going to, what we were going to put in the site, jezebel, we went to an old magazine purveyor. i wouldn't call it a store. it was a guy who had a space, i think, on east 10th between third and fourth ave

barbara was the first person in the 1965 cosmo. i have looked and started trying to track down people doing detective work that they are not around. one lady is in denmark and she changed her name and connected me to people and that's how i made my inroads. >> i have one more question about when you started the book. i know you said to me they were bringing in the cultural women's movement and talked about all the things and i wanted to hear about the evolution of this that you chose. >> my first editor is extremely helpful and read the boo grabbed said this is great. if you want everybody to read this, think about expanding the focus of the a little bit. she's a good example of someone tapping into the zeitgeist and it would be helpful to show the era that she helped find. and i tried to accomplish that but it wasn't easy because in the 60s and 70s she's very blunt and said something like flash cards of the 60s it covered via non- and the assassination. it's different than what people thought of. she was a woman that was kicked ou

imagine was probably still on the air or about to go off and what about a story about helen brown's cosmo and have it be set in the world of women's magazine. that's how it started. as to why, i thought it would be a good story for me and it was. i wanted to do something fun. actually, i have the answer now. my first book is called the new kids and i had spent several years in burst in the lives of these teenagers and all of them were either immigrants or refugees from 50 countries all around the world. it was a great experience but i was really in their lives. i had a boyfriend for ten or 11 or 20 years, we kept getting close to marriage for a long time and it was putting off so many things because i was in their life. when i started to write enter helen it was very immersive but i wanted to have my own life. i had a child at the time and i thought i can't be trucking it to queens and staten island and living all these other people's lives. i would like to have my own life so that's kind of how that -- it was a great subject and it was also something i could do. >> a couple people who kn
