costco has the advantage of being a big box company.ot a lot of employees, so it can average out, it can leverage out those costs in a way that a small business owner of 50 or 100 employees cannot. and so that's going to be the real sweet spot for this conversation. it's not the costcos of the world going, yeah, let's raise the minimum wage, because they have the ability to pass that cost off on to its consumers in a way that they don't necessarily feel it, whereas a small business owner, that impact is much more real, much more up close to their customers, so that conversation is going to have to get itself worked out, and ultimately if it does, you'll see the party moving in a way in which you can have this conversation about raising the minimum wage, because you'll have that small business, the nfib world, behind that movement. you do not have that right now, so the president is saying one thing, and the business community is not on that page and the party's not there, either. >> one of the things, bill, the president said he wanted

now, folks who work at costco understand that. a lot of americans who don't work somewhere like costco. they're working for wages that don't go as far as they once did. today the minimum wage, the federal minimum wage doesn't even go as far as it did back in the 1950s. as the cost of living goes up, the value of the minimum wage goes down over time. just last year alone workers earning the minimum wage basically got the equivalent of a $200 pay cut because the minimum wage stayed the same but costs are going up. i don't need to tell you this. you go shopping. you're like, uh-huh. for a typical minimum wage worker, that's a month's worth of groceries and two months of electricity. it's a big deal to a lot of families. i brought a guy here today who knows about this, tom perez is the secretary of labor, and he works for working families every day. i spoke to governor o'malley that came here from maryland. when he was governor o'malley's secretary in maryland he helped to implement the first statewide living wage law. that helped a l

costco has a fraction of the storage walmart has, 648 u.s. the u.s. workers, and shoppers, wal-mart has eight times the number of workers than costco. dennis: worker pay started at $9 an hour and a minimum wage $7.25. cheryl: walmart says they do promote those people out of those ranks into higher positions, two thirds of minimum-wage workers often moved up the corporate ladder the company ladder. the other thing is the argument about raising the minimum wage will hurt grocery stores where the union movement is very active in the grocery store chains. haven't heard the union movement saying it may not be a good thing for grocery stores to raise the pay of the workers given the fact that they could see layoffs or price increases or benefit cuts in other parts of the company. dennis: they earn one penny of profit for every dollar of food sales. thanks very much. all little perspective as you see the president. cheryl: speaking of the minimum wage debate, the whole idea of a minimum wage on a national level is ridiculous. green leaf said -- laug
