you guys were talking about costco.umbers are just terrific here. 17% above the same period last year for their earnings. gross margins were up. lower gas prices helped the margins. fee income was up 6%. these are great metrics. look at the stock here. it's taken off in the last four or five months. 125 or so. now up 145. here's the problem i have with costco. it's expensive. look at forward earnings projections right now. we're at 27 or so on costco. this is a problem with a number of these consumer names. they're all expensive. target is at 22. home depot at 22. so costco is not alone. kroger is relatively modest. walmart is only 17. that's a real modest one overall. i think this is a bit of an issue for a lot of these stocks going into the end of the year. speaking of the end of the year, we are pushing ipos. this is it, folks. this week and a little bit of next week, they're going to try to get a number of big names through. the big one tonight right here at the new york stock exchange. lending club. this is the big

when oil plummets, costco benefits. costco buys in bulk. they buy very large quantities of oil. they purchase from a number of refineries. one of the analysts told me virtually every refinery in the country. they are buying gasoline 1-2 weeks earlier than many of their competitors and that allows them to capture high margins. they don't have to lower prices when the corner store lowers prices. >> a nice bump for costco. do investors have the long-term vision on this? >> there are two answers. they do care. they talked about it a lot. when gas prices fall, that is the best in terms of profitability. what investors fully care about is the gas business overall. costco is such a smart buyer of gas. they have the lowest gas prices in the country. when drivers come up to the store when the store is open, 50% of them go inside to bible items. -- to buy bulk items. there seem more and more shoppers in the frequency of visits increase. >> what about other gas retailers? what happens to them? >> it's a similar story. they are not as smart of buyers as cosco. they can't offer those low pri

>> my only concern with costco has been valuation. i recognize costco is one of the best run retailers at least in the united states, potentially in the world. my concern is the stock trade, depending on what earnings you're looking at upwards of 30 times. the bigger question, it's something i'm wrestling with. i think there will be beneficiaries out there with respect to lower gas prices, but i don't think so b the benefits are going to be as clear cut as the market believes at this point. >> let's talk about the international opportunities for costco. it will open a flagship online store in china operated by alibaba. how big of an opportunity is china for costco and does it have a brand name that will resinate in asia? >> the best way for me to answer that is that coastco has been very successful outside of the united states. and a company comments continually that some of its best performing highest volume clubs are indeed outside the united states. i think that is a very good base to say when we start thinking about costco in chin

obviously you pay to shop at costco. people like the benefit from that.t the end of the day i think they are gaining share from sam's club. if you look at the core comp and delta between costco and sam's, it's never been as high as today. they are gaining share on the organic side from some of the bigger organic players such as whole foods and fresh market. the results today were phenomenal 8% with over 5% traffic. you just don't see the consistency in retail they are delivering every day. >> it's an amazing story. people are worried about gas margins. why wouldn't you sell it after a nice ride? >> i think there is no better model in retail, to be honest with you. with the balance sheet they've got, store ownership, annuity-like stream. i think decline in gas prices for them will be very beneficial to margins for them over the next couple of quarters. you saw that with kroger today. there's no reason to sell that stock at this level. >> on the gas theme here, you cover costco to the dollar stores to kohl's and macy's. are all these names going to be benef
