congressman costello, let me start with you. a lot of blame going around.as someone who prides himself on fighting for bipartisan solutions to complex problems, how do you see this? >> well, this is the president's shutdown. he said it was going to be his shutdown. the senate voted 100-0 to pass a clean cr and send it to the house. sean hannity and a few other people screamed fire. the president then fell in line behind sean hannity. we in the house vote ed, and i voted for it, for an additional $5 billion and about $8 billion on disaster relief on top of the clean cr. democrats were not willing to go along because they didn't want any more wall funding in there. we sent it to the senate. i don't think there was any reasonable expectation the senate would take that bill up and vote for the wall funding because you need eight democrats in the senate. so the fact we're in shutdown now is foreseeable and i don't see a scenario where the government opens back up until the new congress is sworn in. >> here's the thing congressman costello, when the new congress

congressman costello, i'll start with you. you're leaving the house in a few days, the republicans losing the majority in a few days. do you see a realistic scenario where the shutdown is resolved before that turnover of power? >> i see no chance under the sun for the government being opened until new members are sworn in january 3rd or 4th. >> what will then happen? democrats would have control of the house, republicans maintain control of the senate. do you then see democratic control offering a renewed path? >> no, i think we're going to get less. to the extent you want more border security, you will have less, and jerry can speak to this more than i can, but i think the democratic bill out of the house that the senate will then take up will be less than the 100 to 0 senate vote that was had, or at least no better in terms of border security, which is why the freedom caucus and the president going this route makes zero political sense and zero legislative sense. >> jerry connelly, the democratic perspective, do you agree fi

congressman costello, it seems here that the president is stuck between his base and a hard place? well, he's stuck having to eat his own words. he negotiated against himself in the white house saying that he would own the shutdown. if he had a problem with the clean cr he should have told the senate before they took the bill up. the senate passes a clean cr without any objections from the president and now he wants to upend a senate tradition on the filibuster that's been around for i don't know how many decades. this is chaos. it was totally avoidable, and now we were being asked -- and i voted for it -- to vote for a $5 billion plus up for the wall and disaster relief, which is funded, in order to get a bill out of the house. no one really knows what the next step is at the moment. >> are you frustrated at all with your leaders for not standing up to the president, if the not just sending him a clean cr? >> well, i would have tested that, but i also think, listen, i was in conference yesterday morning when it was very clear that the votes to pass this were not there, and the tho
