bush appointed justice thomas to the united states court of appeals, district of columbia in 1990. 16 months later, president bush came knocking again and nominated justice thomas to the supreme court of the united states. his appointment was confirmed on october 15, 1991. i will simply add to that short bio -- of a productive life that since joining the supreme court in 1991, justice thomas has been a loyal and generous friend of the supreme court historical society. in addition to introducing many of our lecturers, he has hosted our stagers dinners and served as the society's annual lecture lecturer in 1977. it is my pleasure to ensure do shoot tonight to my fellow georgian, justice clarence thomas.
