good morning, courtney. >> good morning. we can tell you yesterday morning we understand this family tells us that one of the brothers pulled into the driveway. he says he was approached by two armed men who demanded his car. he was able to get away and run into the house. he got a gun and came out and fired a shot. they the police and police responded. but occurring the response the brother says he was assaulted by police officers and in the process an officer shot and killed their family dog a 4-year-old rottweiler mix. nothing was stolen during the attempted robbery and officers have not been able to locate the alleged robbers. also, the owner of this dog was arrested in the process, charged with a number of things including assaulting a police officer. joining us live we have major andy ellis of the prince george's police. what you say happened and what they say happened is different. >> our officers responded for a call of shots fired. the neighbors called us. the dog's owner had fired shots. so our officers responded t

courtney ro!inson is live with the late breaking developments. what can you tell us? >> the people taken to the hospital, but many more are on the street. many being evaluated for smoke inhalation and other injuries as they were trying to get out of the building. eight taken to the hospital, 5 to the burn center, and one child was taken to children's hospital center. one of the individuals taken to g.w. jumped out of the window, possibly to aavoid the fire. the fire was on the fifth floor and a common area, making it difficult for people to get out. there were a number of latter rescues as well. -- number of ladder rescues as well. as for the cause, it is still too early to tell but officers will be looking into that. the call came in at 3:45 this morning. units came out just one minute after the call. a very goodjf response time. we spoke to witnesses who saw one of the guys jump out. a very traumatic experiq'ce. >> it was bizarre to walk up on this and there's nothing you can do. the hope has not even arrived yet. it was pretty terrific. -- the help was not even her

let's check in with cnbc's courtney reagan. good morning, courtney. >> good morning.tocks higher across the board, the dow up by about 107 points. it's goods after we had a sluggish start, higher from the beginning but not so much. we've really kind of jumped leaps and bounds as faas the gains are concerned today. this is after we're coming off our third straight week of gains. asian marks mostly quiet overnight. japan, asia's biggest market, i closed for a holiday. stocks are positive as well so a little momentum from our trading partners overseas. it's gong to be a fairly busy week ahead for investors. topped off by tomorrow's fed meeting. the central bank is not expected to move on interest rates. they certainly conditio lower them when they're near zero, but they could signal future measure, such as buying large amounts of bonds and other securities. we'll have reports on housing, manufauring, and unemployment this week. >>> assets minus mortgages and debts fell about 3% this spring to $55 trillion due to a big drop in investments. that's the first quarterly decli

let's get the scoop from pop culture columnist courtney hazlett. paris hilton yesterday was held in japan at the airport by custom officials who were pretty upset about her recent drug charges. she did plead guilty the other day to possessing drugs and lying to a police officer. while at the end of the day after more than six hours of questioning and almost all in two days in japan, not being allowed out of her hotel room, she was told she wasn't allowed to enter into the country and she had to turn around and go back home. paris hilton was there because she was promoting her fashion line and also making stops in malaysia and indonesiana and she has to cancel those trips, too. celebrities had a hard time getting into japan if they had drug charges before. this is nothing knew. >> must have eat a lot of raman, great raman, real japanese raman. >> when you take a private jet you eat raman, i think you call that a net loss. >> what isn't the real stuff is the dancing from the hoff, not real. >> last night was the day that, sadly, the music died for fa
