so, courtney is applying the mascara.can see, she's applying it really from the base of the lashes right near where the eyelid is all the way to the ends. so, some people, one mistake people make is, they put either a lot of product at the base or too much at the ends, and then it kind of has that uneven, goopy, not-consistent look. so you really want to make sure to do long, full sweeps. now, you can see she almost is working the mascara in, in almost like a sawing technique, and that really makes sure that you get the product at the base of the lids, and it builds the lash so it's a little bit fuller and a little bit thicker. so you get that really, really beautiful, defined-lash look. courtney's now moving on to the bottom lashes. now, this is an optional step. and it's a little bit more advanced when it comes to makeup. she's doing the bottom lashes so that when justine looks and has her eyes open, it just really makes her eyes pop and makes your eyes extra, extra, like, kind of attention-grabbing. there you have it.

courtney. >> at least whether it comes to shopping, brian. that's right. can take a look at the cnbc all-america survey here at the wall. we're going to reveal some interesting insights into consumer shopping patterns over the black friday weekend. largely contrary to what we've heard from other organization's surveys, many retailers early up their black friday into thanksgiving thursday. 45% of those we surveyed disapproved of those thanksgiving hours. 18% approved and 37% said i don't have an opinion on that. the 45% disapproval could have played into the responses when we asked which of the following days consumers actually shopped in store over that weekend. 42% of those surveyed shopped in store over some point during that black friday weekend but only 4% of them -- at least so they claim -- took advantage of those thanksgiving hours compared to 16% of those who shopped on black friday itself. when it comes to what consumers are shopping for this holiday season, it appears the tablet is again the hot item for christmas. 21% of shoppers do plan to buy

as the dust settles, courtney reagan now breaks down what was i would say among the developed markets a pretty good year for stocks. >> not that bad. lots of green. we're ending on a high note today. all three indexes closing up today and for 2012. the nasdaq the biggest winner. up almost 16%. the s&p notches a 13.4% gain. and the dow up 7.3% for 2012. when it comes to the blue chips, there was some flip-flopping going on. the biggest gainer last year, the biggest dog of the dow. bank of america. doubled in price this year as the bank improved its financial footing. home depot and disney all saw strong earnings. consumers proved resilient in 2012. jpmorgan another of last year's dogs round out the top five with all big double digit percentage increases. if you look at the numbers, bank of america up a whopping 108%. home depot up 46%. now, hewlett-packard, the dow's second biggest loser in 2011 is this year's worst performer ending the year at a ten-year low down about 45%. after its ceo and accounting scandals. intel struggling with the slowdown in pcs. shares down about 15%. and las

thanks so much. >> courtney reagan with the latest. want to update you on the tragic school shooting in connecticut. let's get to nbc's chris polone. chris? >> reporter: yeah, maria, this is a stunned community as is much of the northeast and the country upon hearing of the awful event that happened here today in newtown, concould. police briefed the media giving the latest information, and here's what we know so far. 26 total victims, 20 of them young children. civics them were adults in the shooting that happened around 9:30 this morning. investigators say that a gunman came to the sandy hook elementary school here in newtown. he entered. he went to a classroom that nbc news has learned was taught by his mother. she was a kindergarten teacher here. it's believed that the gunman killed his mother and the children in her classroom. police say they continue to investigate. they are processing the scene right now. they are also going to court to get search warrants to execute them in various locations, of course, trying to answer the big

let's focus on the outlet mall situation and head over to courtney reagan, who is -- where are you, courtney in bergen county, i'm just down the road, simon, from where cnbc headquarters is we are at the outlets here, luxury has been kind of a mixed picture recently, as the wealthy start to worry about those looming fiscal cliff tax increases. however, outlet malls have actually performed better. consumers are finding value in the off-price luxuries at outlet malls, like this one. >> the consumer has begun to make some significant statement us in terms of their rpreferenc and the outlet malls are starting to find some distance between their performance and the performance other traditional malls. >> outlet mall occupancy nearly 95%, according to capri partners, compares to traditional malls about 90% or so th so. then when you talk about the revenues, 13 to 15% compared to low single digits for their traditional counterparts. we have the average base represent of 8 1/2% for outlet's and those sales up about 9%. l lum board says they are seeing the revenue increase and as a result, high-end r
