for "nightly business report," i'm courtney reagan. >>> joining us now to talk more about the consumerthony chan, chief economist at jpmorgan's chase private client group. you heard our report. consumers are a very important part of our economy. how would you describe right now the financial health of the consumer and the mood of theç consumer? >> i really see the consumer making some real -- showing some real signs of improvement. i'll tell you why. when you look at the loss of wealth, it was pretty significant. from 2007 to 2009, you essentially saw $16 trillion of household net worth disappear. but since then, we've seen household net worth picking up again. and we're now just short $1.3 trillion as of the fourth quarter, the latest numbers the federal reserve has in their flow of funds. but if you look at movements in housing prices, movements in equity prices in the first quarter, i think by the end of the first quarter, the consumer will have gotten all of their $16 trillion back. it is no wonder that consumer confidence is picking up. it is no wonder why retail sales held in so

courtney, good to know. courtney reagan on at hq.i mean, as we see these numbers, 3% is -- i guess not only -- let's set aside the fact that it's halted, but it was up 4% prior to that. what do you make of these numbers? >> i think they're good numbers. when you look at everyone else who is coming out from the month of february and everyone's talking about the storms and the impact it had, you had a couple of things going on. you have the gap brand with a positive 2% comp talking about the success of their presidents day weekend event. it drove traffic. when you look at old navy, the biggest business delivering a 6% comp. and that's up against a 5% last year. it's a good number. and they talked about the two things that worked. the women's business being strong and wovens and denim. women is always your bigger business and when you get denim working, that's a plus. you're going to see the return of denim for the spring. everyone in -- go on. >> i was just going to say, it's a little bit -- it is stunning to hear you talk about it in

cnbc's courtney reagan is here to answer that. good morning. >> good morning. >> the dow has four straight records. s&p is almost there. the s&p 500 index. what's going on? >> almost 14 points away on the s&p, the nasdaq hitting fresh 12-year highs. the market is responding to what we're hear from the economy, the housing market is improving. the jobs numbers, that was good. but also corporations are in better shape. they're returning money to shareholders in the form of dividends. that helps stock prices go up. they're buying back their shares. that also helps with stock prices. we're in a much better place than we were five, four years ago. >> 236,000 jobs added in february, and the jobless rate comes down to 7.7%. that's the lowest since december of 2008. much better than just about anybody expected. right? >> it was. it was much better than what anyone expected. there are still some points of concern. the participation rate is not where we would like it to be. >> meaning the number of people looking for work. >> exactly. some
