bringing in courtney reagan and josh brown. courtney first, retail reporter.ounded like walmart was throwing every excuse in the book between reduction and government subsidies such as food stamps to the weather, to -- increasing spending on smaller spore formats. what's the real deal here? >> we talk about weather as an excuse. right? in this case, a negative impact. bill simons said at one point 200 stores closed. people couldn't get to them if they wanted to because of the weather. that's a problem. this food stamp reduction in the program, in the benefit, is no joke. bill simon also said that u.s. same sto-store sales down, takea way from the food stamp element, flat. a significant impact. that could take time for that lower income consumer to shake off, as result, they saw grocery sales fall. that's a problem, because folks go to walmart to get groceries and pick up the other items on the way out. it really is a domino effect and concerning when looking at the group that serves a lower income consumer. a lot of economic pressure out there. >> josh, it's h

is courtney ready?ot the numbers for us as we watch jcpenney shares very closely. court, what can you tell us? >> it looks like right now for the earnings per share there was a loss of 68 cents for jcpenney but it's better than the expected 85 cent loss that the street was expecting. if we look at the revenue, they're posting a revenue of $3.78 billion. that was a little light. the street had been expecting revenues of $3.85 billion. we already knew the same-store sales for the quarter up 2%. the company told us that at the beginning of february. for the guidance for first quarter, jcpenney is guiding comps gross of 3% to 5%. that's slightly below the latest consensus estimate we have of growth of 5.7%, though mike you willman says a key focus is to improve the gross margin. that's something that investors and analysts are very, very focused on as the company is dealing with heavy, heavy promotions. it's at what cost is that going to be to shareholders. kelly? >> great point, court. thanks very much. we

courtney reagan has more on the challenges ahead and what some analysts are advising investors to do with the stock. >> reporter: j.c. penney seems to garner an outsize amount of attention every earnings season for the past few years. and with good reason. the 112-year-old department store is now just a shadow of its former self. j.c. penney has shed more than $16 billion in market cap since its 2007 peak, signature under 2 billion today. it was struggling before it brought in new ceo ron johnson though his turn around cost j.c. penney a 15% stock decline in his 17 months at the helm. former ceo returned to stem the bleeding in april of last year, but the stock has fallen a further 65% in just ten months. cash is another concern. j.c. penney closed 2013 with $2 billion in liquidity, but some think the department store won't register enough in sales to offset the cash burn and might need to raise capital at the end of this year or the beginning of 2015. investors are losing faith in a j.c. penney turn around. and analysts growing more pessimistic about j.c. penney's fup. while the sam

courtney reagan has more now on best buy's turn around and what's next for the retailer. >> reporter: in january best buy reported disappointing holiday sales and warned of compressed profit margins which sent shares tumbling 28%. but today's full quarterly results are changing some investors' thoughts about best buy. despite weaker than expected 15e8s, best buy's earnings beat the street by a wide margin thanks to a stronger than anticipated level of cost cutting. you will profit margins weren't as bad as feared, even after the retailer warned it had to cut prices to remain competitive during the holiday season. best buy ceo has also made e-commerce and faster more efficient product delivery a priority and it's working. >> we've made a lot of progress online. the online sales are up 26% in the fourth quarter. becoming much more competitive with amazon. but at the end of the day, turn arounds are bumpy. that's what we're seeing here. they made a lot of progress in 2013. i think they'll continue to make progress, maybe not at the pace that we originally thought. >> reporter: i spoke to

but as courtney reagan tells us, the retail giant has to tell us if this is a one-time slip or if there are a lot more issues to worry about. >> reporter: the world's largest retailer warning wall street its holiday quarter profit is falling short of the company's original expectation. walmart says a number of factors are negatively impacting profit including closing a number of stores in brazil, china, and india. in the u.s. the discount retailer calls out the reduction in the government's food stamp program and rough winter weather for larger than expected hits to sales and traffic. walmart isn't the only retailer to warn about a less than stellar holiday season but it is the largest leaving investors to wonder if the weakness at walmart is temporary, company specific, or indicative of larger consumer spending issues. >> the consumer has definitely been in a bit of a funk. it was a very difficult fourth quarter for retailers, particularly bricks and mortar retailers. but the underpinnings of consumer spending are actually a little better right now than they were this time a year ago.

courtney reagan has more. >> reporter: walmart will release earnings tomorrow morning, but wall street got a peek into its bah hum bug holiday quarter when the retailer warned its fourth quarter profit would be at or slightly below the low end of its previous forecast, leaving investors waiting to hear what new ceo doug mcmillan says about the company's outlook. while he wasn't yet overseeing the company during its holiday quarter he'll lead the earnings call on monday morning as investors wonder how walmart will deal with a difficult environment. >> gas prices are starting to head up a little bit. weather is impacting everybody in retail. and most of all, we just have a consumer at the low end that has been struggling for a number of years and doesn't seem to be getting really any benefits from any of these real improvements in the economy that we're seeing. >> reporter: while not everything seems to be working for walmart, the retailer has repeatedly touted its small format stores as a point of success, announcing plans to add up to 150 more of them this year. while walmart has tradi
