back over to you guys. >> courtney, thank you courtney reagan back in headquarters with the latest inzon prime days, plural. let's continue the conversation. senior restaurant and retail analyst. good morning to you. when will we know if prime day was a success? >> i think we'll know right out of the gates i think what you see is the company gives some updates as they go through the two days so i think we'll know pretty early on how they're trending compared to the past couple years. i actually think we could see a 50% jump-up from last year, something in the 6.3 to 6.5 billion. i think we'll know early on and we're already seeing a lot of indications, too, with the early deals, and particularly on the subscription front i think that's what amazon is really pushing this year, is not only to get more prime members in but engage with them and offer them services like music, audible, kindle. i think that's where they're going to be successful in not only getting the members in. instead of the based 120 membership fee, they end up paying $150, $200 a year i think that's what amazon is loo

our courtney reagan has the latest on that from hq courtney >> hey, john so today, like you said, just beginning of amazon's fifth prime day, which has become this annual shopping event. and it'snot just amazon that's participating, but hundreds of other sites, too so while estimates will variy for the exact revenue that prime day actually generates for amazon, core site research estimates it will hit $5.1 billion this year, that's about 1.4% of amazon's annual sales. while the event is in 18 countries, around 60% of the sales will be generated right here in the u.s. from an estimated 63 million prime members, because you've got to be a member to take part in the deal the event is a recognititention vehicle, so it reinforces the benefit of the program, but also a key recruitment event for new prime members. last year, amazon added more prime members during the day than any other day in its history. didn't tell us exactly how many, though a cowen and company survey suggested that 10% of non-prime households would consider signing up to access the deals that's a big number. but there are

courtney kube following the developments from the pentagon. and jeffrey mccaffrey. there are those so frustrated it has taken so long to get a defense secretary in place. how do you see this confirmation process going for esper? >> people think he will slide through this confirmation. it's possible he will get voted, confirmed and sworn in this week. then they can start working on the other more than a dozen open slots for political appointees, including esper's number two. that he wants the deputy secretary of defense. we could see a nominee on that as early as next week. so far this hearing has not had a whole lot of fireworks. we expect mark esper who is the army secretary as he is awaiting confirmation, we expect him to get questions on things like tensions with iran. we expect him to get questions on personnel issues like the ongoing back and forth about whether transgender individuals can openly serve in the military. and we did have -- we have one interesting back and forth with him already where he defended the u.s. military role along the border. let's hear
