peter and courtney plea, standby. joining us now by phone is msnbc military analyst colonel jack jacobs colonel jack your reaction to news tonight that the united states has performed limited strikes in syria against the iranian revolutionary guard corps. >> well, it's not surprising that iran has done what it's done. it tries as much as possible to use proxies, but its fingerprints are on absolutely every attack on american and allied interests in the region. and so, at some juncture, they would expect that the united states would strike. we have struck before in syria and other places as a result of attacks on american interests. it depends on whether or not iran wants to take it further. the likelihood is that they will not. they will continue to use proxies, make small scale attacks, and as we heard, in the event that there is a death, an american death, as a result of an attack by iran or in iran proxy, then we can expect an escalation and we already have plans to attack a specific targets among iranian interests

it hasn't, courtney. for the month of june, sustained itself and now we get the september data and what's happening, courtney, two things. one, people are marking up the gdp, not just for this quarter which i guess apologies to the atlanta fed, which i've often reported has been way too high. this month it looks like in the 4%, 5% gdp range could be about right but it's flatter in the fourth quarter because of the starting point from september. the other thing it's doing, courtney, raising the odds of a fed rate hike. for the first time we are just about at the 50% level for january. that wasn't even in play. everybody thought if they didn't get it done this year, it was not going to get done at all. now they've transferred their fed anxiety from this year to the first month of next year. and so not much chance in november. a bit more chance in december. now we're talking about january being in play as well. >> why now? right now it looks like the economy is pretty strong. >> reporter: people are hedging

joining us from washington, and equally excellent reporter, courtney kube. what can you tell us about the military moves in the middle east? are they imminent? has the order been given it to launch? >> yes, they have started moving. like we're just hearing from ralph, the israeli military is moving capabilities. it's for a different purpose. according to the officials who are now saying that there is an entire carrier strike group moving toward the eastern med, they are saying this is for a show of support for the israeli people and the israeli military and government. what we are talking about here is the uss gerald r ford, a carrier, a u.s. aircraft carrier, and the associated ships in the strike group. that includes destroyers, a cruiser, and th a full complementf rcft which will be assigned to those ships. we're talking thousands of sailors, pilots, u.s. marine corps pilots and u.s. service members associated with it in addition to that, there will also be,the s. military will, as they say, augment so o the aircraft squadrons already in the re that inclu

let's go right now to nbc's courtney kube in washington, d.c. with the latest. what can you tell us about these strikes and do we know what the targets exactly were? >> reporter: we know more about the targets now. there were two facilities. one was a weapons storage facility and another was an ammunition storage area. according to a senior u.s. military official, the individual could not tie a direct link between the actual weapons, mainly drones, being used on these attacks against bases housing u.s. military personnel in iraq and syria over the last eight or nine days. the official couldn't say those exact weapons our produced or stored or anything at these locations, but the official did say that he is confident that the strikes will impact these iranian backed proxy group's ability to attack u.s. forces, that these strikes would have that impact. the strikes were were carried ought by two f-16s. they used manned guided mission tuesday carry them out. they are still doing a battle damage assessment and cannot say yet whether there were any casualties caused

we'll bring in nbc news pentagon correspondent courtney kube.ney, why didn't israel or the u.s. get any indications that this was going to happen? >> that's been one of the biggest questions for the last 48 hours since this all unfolded, is not just how did they not know that hamas was planning some sort of an attack, but something on this scale. we're talking about a multi-pronged coordinated and timed attack, something we have not seen hamas do in the past. our teams at nbc have really been trying to dig into this. the reality is there's no real clear answer at this point of exactly how they were able to really catch israel flat-footed, but really to catch the rest of the world flat-footed with this attack, jose. >> it's such a widespread attack. using so many different kinds of transportation, air and fast boats, et cetera. courtney, it's also -- people have been asking about how maybe the idf and security forces were not there when the attack happened. it took some time for the forces to be able to come to the gaza area on the israeli side.

nbc news pennell correspondent courtney kuby joins us now. courtney, the airstrikes come as a precarious time in the region. what more can you tell us and how is the u.s. prevent it's this from escalating in hamas with israel into a wider conflict? >> reporter: everything we've seen the u.s. do and try to message since october 7th has been a message of deterrence with an effort of de-escalating the situation or keeping what is happening in israel and in gaza from spreading to the region. that's what we're hearing from defense officials about these strikes that occurred in northeastern syria overnight, stephanie. they struck two locations. they were, one was an ammunition storage facility. the other a weapons storage facility. according to a statement we got from secretary of defense lloyd austin overnight, facilities directly tied to the iranian revolutionary guard corps and proxy. those believed behind the 28 attacks you mentioned on u.s. bases. bases housing u.s. personnel in iraq and syria since october 17. the idea according, the statemen

joining us now with that reporting is nbc's courtney kube at the pentagon.us through what you have been able to learn. >> reporter: there's been the very public facing messaging out of the biden administration, from president biden himself, then of course secretary of state antony blinken who has been engaged in this diplomacy throughout the region, and secretary of defense, lloyd austin. it's a message that israel has the right of self-defense and that the u.s. will do pretty much anything to support them in that effort, in that self-defense effort. now, behind the scenes, what we have been together according to a number of current and former officials, they are urging some restraint, and that includes allowing civilians and specifically americans, allowing them out of gaza, getting them out of harm's way, and trying to ensure that civilians are given some sort of safe passage. i will say, we have heard a little glimmer of some of this in the public messaging, specifically from secretary blinken and secretary austin, when they have talked about the need for

s courtney kube. courtney, welcome. i understand that there is new information on u.s. military plans, as all these tensions are escalating in the middle east. what can you tell us? >> that's. right one thing that we have been watching for, ever since this all started early saturday morning is will the u.s. military react with some show of presents? show of support? what we now know is that the u.s. military does have some plans to move some u.s. military, u.s. navy ships closer to israel into the mediterranean. some u.s. military aircraft closer to israel. now the u.s. officials i spoke to who are familiar with this planning said that this is about a show of support. in addition to that, alex, it could also serve another purpose. that is that the u.s. is very actively planning for the possibility of some sort of and evacuation. if americans have to get out of israel, in the u.s. government has to help them, some of these military assets could be used for that. remember what we saw on sudan several months ago. the u.s. military put ships off the coast nearby, and they w

courtney, you have new details on the u.s.sets and the houthi rockets that were shot down on thursday. >> yeah, and we are just actually learning in the last couple of hours, too, that there's even been another one of these attempted attacks on a base housing u.s. military, this one in southern syria, it's a garrison near the border with jordan, again, in southern syria. two attack drones attempted to hit the base, they were both shot down, no injuries, but it really underscores how there has within this uptick in the last several days in attempts on bases housing u.s. troops in iraq and syria. it was something we hadn't really seen happening at this sort of tempo for some time, andrea. you mentioned the carny. now, late last week the carny was in the northern red sea when several missiles, we learned its actually four land attack cruise missiles, were fired from yemen by houthi rebels, of course, they are backed by the iranians, they were fired over the carny. now, the carnyho them down. u.s. officials and defense officials h

. >> courtney kube now, pledges of support, but no boots on the ground. what is the u.s.e know? >> that's right. so, some of what we just heard from jon finer about the technical experts already there in israel now supporting the idf and israeli special forces in the effort to find the hostages, some include special operations forces, specifically people from jsoc. and these are the types of u.s. military troops very elite forces who have expertise in this sort of situation. so, it is finding missing people, finding hostages, and trying to figure out ways you can rescue them, especially when we're talking about a situation like we see right now in gaza. that is tight, narrow streets, high rise buildings and an area where you have hamas who is very dug in among a civilian population. it is an extremely difficult version of urban warfare and when you compound that with the fact that there are tunnel systems underneath, extensive, and elaborate tunnel systems underneath the city, that's the kind of expertise that they bring in these sorts of people to help with. all that bei

courtney kube joins us this morning. courtney, the pentagon says u.s. citizen contractor died of a heart attack during one of these attacks. what do we know about this and about the targets struck by the u.s.? >> yes, so that happened last week, jose. there was an american contractor during one of these shelter in places, the individual had a cardiac event and died from it. but you mentioned there have also been as a direct impact from some of the drone strikes and indirect fire during these 19 attacks, there have been a number of u.s. military personnel who also have been injured. they have fortunately been not -- not been major injuries, but still significant that there have been nearly two dozen injuries at this point, jose. we heard a little bit just last hour with our colleague ana cabrera, she spoke with pat ryder, the press secretary here, he explained why the u.s. is in iraq and syria right now and that he said that the u.s. will continue to do what is necessary to protect the troops. here's what he had to say. >> we have u.s. forces in iraq and

kate. >> courtney kube, thank you. >>> a reminder of the geography here.s is the gaza strip, about 140 square miles, one of the most densely populated places on earth with 2 million palestinians there. israel withdrew its forces from gaza nearly 20 years ago, but along with egypt, it still controls all of gaza's land and sea borders as well as its airspace. inside of gaza, the hamas militant group is in charge. it's deemed a terrorist group by the united states. its goals include ending israel's occupation of palestinian territories, but they also call for the complete destruction of israel. if we zoom out even more, israel has long been the world's only jewish state with some of its neighbors opposed to its very existence. the u.s. has always supported israel, calling it the lone democracy in the region. let's turn now to gabe gutierrez with more on the biden administration response. >> reporter: congress paralyzed, unable to act without a house speaker. there are mounting questions about future u.s. aid to israel. >> any sort of additional appropriations

courtney kube is following the latest on this rt part. what is the secretary of defense saying? >> reporter: the announcement of 300 troops, they're going to the middle east and they'll do some communication support troops, they follow after a recent announcement that 900 other u.s. troops have moved into the region, those are included some of the forces and operating the air defense systems, secretary austin announced they were going in about ten days ago after the u.s. has searched thousands of additional forces in on two carriers strike groups, adaisal fighter attack aircraft, and then are also still hundreds more u.s. troops who are on prepare to deploy orders ready to go if called upon to do so. since october 7th, the u.s. has really plussed up their forces in the region and important to point out while they're in central command area in the middle east they're not sending these troops into israel or gaza. >> important clarification, courtney, what's the motivation behind these attacks on americans, do they think iran is directly involved? >> they're not saying they're dire

courtney kube joins us now. courtney, what more do we know about the move. we heard netanyahu praising the u.s. for being so supportive. what does it really mean in terms of what they'll do once they get there? >> reporter: yeah, that support has been echoed by senior officials about the need for the u.s. to continue to support israel. so, as far as that carrier strike group going in there it's about projecting power and deterrence against hamas and against other groups, one of the u.s. military's efforts to stop this battle, this fight from spreading outside of israel and outside of gaza, that's a major part of the reason that the carrier went in there and it could serve a dual purpose, if there's a need to help get americans and dual citizens out of israel. the aircraft carrier, they could be use as a wait station to get americans out of harm's way. for the most part it's about deterring this fight from going outside the borders. >>> we're now hearing from some americans who are living in israel and survived those attacks. >> we want to bring in rachel, fr

. >> i want to bring courtney kube into our conversation, nbc correspondent, courtney, what can you tell us? >> so we've got a little bit more detail about the strikes tonight. first off, they were carried out by f-16s, so what we expected, manned jets according to syria's military officials, they dropped precision munitions, which is what we expected. the two locations were apparently a weapons storage facility and an ammunitions storage facility. we don't know much more about that. the official would not say whether these were literally so directly linked to the attacks! that we've seen in iraq and syria recently, that the actual munitions could've been stored and prepared or whatever their. but both the senior u.s. officials said that they were confident these strikes, taken out these facilities, would impact these groups abilities to continue to attack u.s. forces. now, one thing that's kind of notable is we were asking about casualties, and they said that, as of now, they cannot say whether there were any casualties at the site or not. nor could they say there were any iranians that

joining us now is nbc news correspondent courtney kube.xplain to us what they are considering doing. but also, the u.s., by all accounts so far, did not see this coming either? >> absolutely. even to the point where we heard on meet the press, just moments ago, blinken told our kristen welker that in fact they will not anticipate this. widely reported that the u.s., at least, did not know this was in fact. people, i spoke to yesterday morning u.s. officials and military officials said if israel knew about it they did not share it with the u.s. but you mention that israel had such extensive intelligence capabilities you are absolutely right, katie. they have exquisite capabilities. and when you consider the fact that much of where hamas is based in the gaza strip, it's really in their own backyard. they have not only overhead signals intelligence, but they also have been known to have pretty extensive human intelligence networks inside of the gaza strip and in and around where hamas is operating. so, that's why this is such an unbelievable
