i'm courtney kealy in new york.in southern california is helping firefighters douse the final embers of the firestorm that engulfed the region for weeks. the catastrophic palisades and eaton fires are now fully contained, but not before thousands of homes were reduced to ash. the state's largest private insurance company, statefarm, has already paid out a billion dollars in claims. and it's asking for an emergency 22% rate increase. rebuilding l.a. will take time, and president trump's immigration crackdown could worsen what is already a shortage of construction workers. mark strassmann reports. >> reporter: on this street in north pasadena, we ran into about a dozen workers volunteering to clear debris, potential kindling just two miles from the eaton fire's burn scar. many of these workers are here illegally. bernardo ocerio is their crew boss. he migrated from mexico 36 years ago, and in 2021 became a u.s. citizen. >> from every single people, you're afraid. >> reporter: what are they afraid of? >> deportations.
