courtney keeley is live outside of that hotel. courtney according to the u.n.assador, there is momentum towards a political solution in syria. what has to happen today to make that happen? >> reporter: well, del, a lot has to happen. and this morning there was about an hour-long meeting -- one on one between secretary of state john kerry and the russian foreign minister? . they were going over specific language in this draft resolution. one british ambassador said it was like dancing on the head of a pin, this kind of diplomacy. but there has been momentum in recent weeks. they met twice before in vienna. they are here now in new york. they are trying to move forward to later this afternoon bring this draft resolution to the u.n. security council to be chaired by secretary of state john kerry, and then get that passed. now if you remember, in the past, many times before, russia has often been the blocker, has often vetoed these resolutions. we'll see what happens in the coming hours, del. >>courtny you have rivals, putting it politely, coming together at the sa

al jazeera's courtney keeley is live outside of the plaza hotel in new york city where negotiations are taking place. courtney? [ music ] >> hi, tony, there were a lot of negotiations happening behind closed doors today. before they even got to that meeting 17 world powers you had foreign minister sergei lavrov sit down with secretary of state john kerry. it took about an hour. they delayed the talks, they came to a resolution and it went to the u.n. security council for that unanimous vote. we did hear from lavrov and kerry in front of the cameras, this is what the secretary of state had to. >> i no one is sitting here today suggesting to anyone that the road ahead is a gilded path. it's complicated. it will remain complicated. but this at least demands that the parties come to the table. >> so basically not a gilded path but a road map that starts in two weeks. they want a cease-fire in syria nationwide. it will be interesting to see what players come to that cease-fire and what don't. when lavrov spoke, he said not quite--he's not quite optimistic but they're willing to move forward.

i want to get to courtney keeley now. meetings are underway in new york involving diplomats from 17 nations, and they are discussing a political transition to the end of the war in syria. courtney talk us through what is going on there, what is on the table and the stakes involved here. >> reporter: really high stakes moment by moment, hour by hour, we have secretary of state john kerry meeting with 16 other world powers, including the saudis, russians, and iranians all at the table today talking about what they can do next to somehow start a national ceasefire across syria, and somehow effort some kind of resolution, so they are working on a draft resolution today, going through the language. the first meeting today which happened just as the large meeting was supposed to go on, an individual meeting between foreign minister -- the russian foreign minister, sergei lavrov, and secretary of state john kerry sat down about pretty much the idea of transition. does bashar al-assad stay or go? that's the weighty issue right now
