courtney, you asked general mckenzie about what the u.s. is doing to prem for future attacks. here is what he said. >> the forces we need to protect ourselves there, i'm always in a constant dialogue with the secretary. if i needed anything else, i would be talking to him immediately. i think we have what we need to protect ourselves. let's talk about the threat streams. very real threat streams, very, very -- what we would call tactical. that means imminent could occur at any moment and they range from rocket attacks. we know they would like to lob a rocket in there if we could. we have pretty good protection against that. we have our anti-rocket and mortar system, the gun systems that those of you who have been out there are familiar with effective against these kinds of attacks. we are well positioned around the boundary and feel we would be in good shape should that kind of attack occur. we also know they aim to get a suicide vehicle born suicide attack in if they can from a small vehicle to a large vehicle working all of those options. >> courtney, these threats are activ

that's why general mckenzie made it very clear if they have the intelligence they do have the capability to hit. the big question is would they have the intelligence? >> courtneye for us at the pentagon today covering the briefing from general mckenzie who is making the calls on what's happening on the ground there in a moment-by-moment situation in afghanistan. courtney, we appreciate you. thank you. joining us now is illinois congressman who sits on the house intelligence committee. congressman, i want to begin by getting your thoughts about today's attack and what more you're hearing about what happened today. >> well, first of all, our hearts go out to the troops at the airport, especially the families of the fallen. they were doing their duty as they knew that they were targets, potential targets of an attack. we can't assume these attacks are over. going to the point of intelligence i think at this point we are going to have to work with the taliban to go after our common enemy and the third thing work on ways to evacuate people, americans, from the country. because, quite frankly, our troops aren't designed to be guarding such an airport in such an urba

courtney, let's listen to part of what general mckenzie said yesterday when he was announcing the withdrawal when the final plane had lifted off. >> there is a lot of heartbreak associated with this departure. we did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out, but i think if we'd stayed another ten days that we wouldn't have gotten out, and there still would be people disappointed with that. it's a tough situation. >> courtney, now the general said the military operation is over. this is a diplomatic mission and we have no diplomats on the ground. they've all left in doha in a u.s. embassy there. we understand there is no relationship because we have not recognized them or recognize good transition government, but there will still be communication. how do we get people out? >> so right now, as you well know, andrea, this is a diplomatic mission. there will be two lines of effort and the diplomacy side and peter mentioned the qataris as a potential intermediate and that will be one of the main lines of effort and the other will be the economic one and that is something that the taliban a

courtney, back to you, because you were in kabul a month ago, and interviewing the outgoing general frank mckenzie, and he talked about the afghanistan army had to execute the plan. so did the plan not work or was the plan bad or what happened? how surprised was the u.s. military that we now find ourselves in this position? >> so the plan was to consolidate the afghan military back to some of the provincial capitals and basically made a decision that they were not going to be able to hold the whole country, and choose the ones with the most strategic, and biggest populations and save those. what is telling is what we have seen in the last couple of days is that the ones that they were trying to protect or save, and in kunduz and herat and in sherif that is holding now, but the ones that are falling or under serious pressure, and so that is the sense of the challenge that the military is facing here. we should also point out that the taliban has been very smart in the military strategy of how they have overtaken the country. they have cut off, and taken the border crossings as matt was mentioning a

courtney kube, the latest from the pentagon, the update on the number of troops and the fact that general mckenzie did meet face to face with the taliban trying to get some assurances, i imagine, from that branch of the taliban, but we don't know how monolithic the taliban is because the intelligence is there are a lot of different forces and we don't know who is on the ground in various places in coordination with whoever this was. >> yeah, and that situation has only become more cloudy and muddied over the course of the last couple of weeks as the taliban have been rolling through various areas, they're gathering up for fighters, from the prisons they're emptying out and people they are forcing, or encouraging to join them as they move through various areas. so the situation has only become more and more con fused. i'll say from a u.s. military perspective, there are a couple of developments we're watching right at this hour. one of them is, you've already mentioned, we now have confirmation, the pentagon press secretary john kirby confirmed that, in fact, u.s. military, there was some sort of e
