cox.really, he made us first submit a letter. the white house, which we thought was a big waste of time. but he thought it was the proper thinto do before he would let subpoena the tapes he wrote letter of request, which, of cose, was denied as we thought it would be, which then enabled us do the subpoena. but that's part of archie's ethical nature. his integrity, his respect for the law, his respect for the presidency. so all of his character played into how this solved itself. yeah. now, jt, at this time there's another crisis brewing and has to do with vice president spiro agnew who it rns out was accepting bribes. a littlehite envelopes. so were heily involved in how did your how did elliott's office try to deal with that. so it did blow up and derail the watergate investigation. i don't remember that being a concern the watergate investigation was well in hand with cox, his staff and, the agnew investigaon was being run by the us attorney baltimore and close consultation with elliott

respected cox's jurist.and he always respected what cox told him as to why the special prosecution was doing what it was doing and it was really a remark notable and very fortunate. and it's interesting, as richard said, archie had no prosecutorial experience. but as eliot told, it was the basic of the man that formed the basis of trust between them that he relied on. so on of cox suspects very early on that there might be tapes because nixon's assistant attorney general at doj, henry peterson, had told that nixon had insisted that he was innocent and kind of blurted, you can listen to the tape. and that always stuck in archie's mind. so, bob, in the book, the final days, just a fabulous account of this time period. you tell the story inside white house of how nixon tried to deceive his own lawyers, the subjects of the tapes. what can tell us about that? well, first as well, nixon's main lawyer was fred bouchard, right. and for the final days, we did 17 interviews with bizarre a really full unraveling of his
