. >> joining me now from trenton, new jersey, this morning is msnbc's craig melvin. craig, let's first talk about these new documents that we're getting today. what is everybody expecting to find in them? what is the detail of these documents? >> thomas, we're expecting somewhere north of 900 pages of documents to be released here in trenton. that's why we're here. i was just inside a few moments ago. i asked about those documents. we're told that they are going to be released some time late morning, so that would mean we should get them within the hour, but they are not saying that's necessarily going to happen. the question of what can we expect to find, we don't really know. what we do know is that all of this sort of started, if you will, because of the initial document dump, and it was in those documents that we saw the e-mails, we saw the text messages that prompted that two-hour apology yesterday. and also, of course, it was in these documents we saw david wildstein, the top port authority executive, who has since resigned, where he referred to the mayor, where

msnbc's craig melvin is in trenton. craig, what do we know about what he's expected to say? >> he's going to start here, the ceremony itself is going to start about 10:30 behind me at the war memorial. the governor is expected to start speaking some time around noon. that speech; as you indicated, going to hit on familiar themes when it comes to christie's speeches, he'll talk about bipartisanship, compromise, he's going to mention sandy. he's also going to be talking about the benefits of small government. we can tell you based on some of the excerpts that we've seen, he's going to say in part, "we will fight to continue to change government so that we value our differences and honor the strength of our diversity. we cannot fall victim of the attitude of washington, d.c., the attitude that says i am always right and you are always wrong, and the attitude that puts everyone into a box they are not permitted to leave. the attitude put political wins ahead of policy agreements. the belief that compromise is a dirty word." so that's just a snippet of what we expect to hear toda

. >> hello, everyone, i'm craig melvin. it is a busy thursday afternoon. president obama, the first lady at the white house there whereas you've just watched and heard, just rolled out a new initiative to expand access to american colleges and universities especially to low income students. we're going to have much more on that in a few moments but we start with the investigation of new jersey governor chris christie which has officially started at this very moment, the new jersey state assembly and senate are beginning the process of putting together special investigatory committees and subpoenas could come later today. the focus of that investigation, however, playing it very cool, this morning governor christie was an hour from the state capitol, meeting with homeowners hurt by hurricane sandy. a not so subtle reminder of why he's still quite popular in the garden state. >> when you take that oath, the tag line at the end is not if everything goes the way it's supposed to. the tag line at the end is so help me god. right? and i think all of us have thou

we start with craig melvin out of the new jersey state house in trenton. craig, what's the latest? >> reporter: here's the thing right now, toure. those pages have just come out. we are expecting 900. turns out it's roughly 2,040 pages just released by the assembly. we are trying to go page by page here. a number of people sifting through sections. this is again, right now, all i can tell you based on what i see is among other things in that report, there's a formalized review of the traffic study. that review of the traffic study and conclusion of that review are marked tbd. i can tell you according to pages 34, 35, exhibit b, the report is broken down into six or seven sections, the executive director of port authority at one point according to this report orders lanes back open and says he thinks "this hasty and ill-advised decision" and he also says again, this is coming from executive director of the port authority, he says he thinks it violates the law. he then asks how they can get the word out that everything is open again and then at one point according to the report, some

this might mean for the future as well as what's happening on the grount ground, casey hunt and craig melvinve in trenton where the snow is coming down steadily. let's talk about what the governor said, also this so-called super committee and you've got some developments on that. >> reporter: yeah, with regards to the speech, richard, i think we heard what we expected to hear. he talked compromise and bipartisanship and mentioned sandy. we did not have a hat tip or nod to the investigation or should i say investigations. he did not acknowledge those. but we really didn't expect him to. there were a couple of not so veiled jabs at new york, which i did find a tad odd. 90 minutes before the governor took the stage here behind me at the war memorial, there was a bipartisan group of legislators who came together to announce the creation of this so-called super committee. they use that word by the way as well. it's going to be made up of 12 new jersey legislators and eight of them will be from the assembly. four of them will be from the senate. eight of them will be democrats and four of them wil

nbc's craig melvin is in trenton, new jersey. this decision made by the committees today, will this also cover the allegations of the mayor of hoboken? >> reporter: fantastic question. the same question i asked one of the cochairs of the committee. i asked whether those claims by don zimmer originally made on msnbc over the weekend that she was forced to sign off on a private development in exchange for sandy relief money. the christie administration denies it happened. this was the response when i asked the question. >> clearly she raises serious allegations. there are a lot of things swirling about. the fist business is to follow the information we had to date where we have somebody in the governor's office abusing power. we'll follow the trail where it leads. we are not going to switch gears and follow another investigation. >> reporter: at this point it looks like the scope of the committee, the scope of the investigation could very well include those claims once the committee meets we'll get -- we should get a better feel fo

craig melvin has been following that story for us and picks up the live coverage from trenton. hey there, craig. >> reporter: any moment now in trenton, new jersey, we are expecting the state legislature to release north of 900 pages, some 900 plus pages of documents related to the bridge scandal. the shutting down of two lanes on the george washington bridge last september. we were told we would get the documents late morning. that still has not happened. at last check we were told it could happen any moment now. in those documents when we do get our hands on them, we are expecting to see among other things additional e-mails, additional text messages that were turned over as part of the state legislature's investigation into the matter. there's also of course this federal inquiry and calls for a full federal investigation. a class-action lawsuit has been filed in federal court by at least six new jersey residents taking aim at christie's now former deputy chief of staff and former port authority officials along with the state of new jersey and the port authority. all of this s

i'm craig melvin, in for tamron hall. we're following new niegz from the christie administration from the latest allegations in the so-called bridge scandal. with less than 24 hours before he's set to take the oath of office for his second term, his administration is spending today, fighting allegation s frm the mayor of hoboken, new jersey, that sandy relief funds may have been tied to support of a private development project in the city. she responded to the claims made by mayor dawn zimmer this morning with a flat out denial. >> mayor zimmer's version of our conversation in may of 2013 is not only false. but is illogical and does not withstand scrutiny when all of the facts are examined. any suggestion, any suggestion that sandy funds were tied to the approval of any project in new jersey is completely false. >> zimmer then responded to those remarks in a statement saying, quote, i am genuinely disappointed that the lieutenant governor has lived up to her promise that she would deny linking hoboken's application for sa

joining me now for our daily fix, craig melvin live in trenton and "washington post" columnist ruth marcusto you, craig, what was the mood at the inaugural given the fact there are snow problems and people couldn't get there and they had to can sem the big bash? >> you mentioned the bash, the one on ellis island that's not going to happen as a result of weather. governor christie in his comments acknowledging that a number of folks who wanted to get here could not make the drive up the new jersey turnpike because of the weather. i can also tell you right now the inauguration has been over about 45 minutes, traffic is still backed up as folks try to get out as a result of the weather as well. but the war memorial behind me was still filled with several hundred christie supporters, applause still broke out at the approach times as you heard during the 18-minute speech. the governor did not acknowledge unlike the state of the state address, he did not acknowledge the growing investigation and growing scandal and number of investigations, of course the inquiry as well mentioned by the inquiry

craig melvin is in fort lee where the governor is heading to apologize in person to the city payor. craig, while christie was uncharacteristically quiet about this when the story broke yesterday, he was in full talk mode this morning. >> reporter: yeah. abby, good afternoon to you. this is fort lee, new jersey. the borough of fort lee, roughly 35,000 people live here. it's in the shadow of that aforementioned bridge, the george washington bridge, the busiest in america. this is city hall. this is where we are expecting governor christie's arrival any minute now. this is the largest media presence the borough of fort lee has probably ever seen. literally 50, 60 cameras here waiting on the governor. we're told the governor may arrive out back. the governor, when he comes, in addition to apologizing to the mayor to his face, the mayor said in a news conference earlier today that he wants governor christie to apologize to the people of fort lee as well. the mayor said he felt that the governor had essentially disrespected the people of fort lee, that he didn't respect the folks here when

we want to go to craig melvin in new york's central park. we know that the city schools are shut down. craig, what are the reviews on mayor de blasio so far? >> you know what, thomas, it's going to depend on who you ask. again, as you indicated there, a million kids out of school today. and you know, as i'm talking to you, by the way, you can see this has become a familiar sight here in central park throughout the morning, snow plows. some 450 plows have been -- trucks have been outfitted with plows here in the city. 2500 other trucks. but this is what they have been doing all morning here in central park. but going back to new york city's new mayor, bill de blasio sworn in just a few moments after midnight on new year's day, already his first major test. and it's very interesting because you might remember when he was city advocate back in 2010, he was highly critical of then mayor bloomberg, of his response to a storm then, saying that the plows did not get to some of the outer boroughs quickly enough, some of the outer suburbs quickly eno

first, craig melvin starts us off from new york's central park. craig? >> good morning. greetings from central park. the adjective you used was brutal. that would be apt. the wind continues to howl here in central park. somewhere between 15 and 20. that is before the wind starts to blow. the temperatures are expected to stay low and get lower. this evening and into tonight. you mentioned the plows as well in new york city. the first area that gets plowed as not seen that many on the right end of the cab. you have more snow that continues to fall. we can say about 1700 trucks have been outfitted with plows and are working to get the roads around new york city plowed. we can say that the long i land expressway and the through way, those are both completely open now. jfk had been shut down and we are told that the airport itself is going to be reopening in a short time as well. my friend and colleague richard louie is standing by in boston. it's not just the cold, but the snow as well. >> very good day to you and good morning to all. plenty of snow here. reports of 8 to up

holmes in today for craig melvin. you are watching msnbc. and this breaking and sad story on this saturday afternoon, tragedy at the mall. we've been covering this story out of columbia, maryland. three people now confirmed dead after gunfire erupted at the mall of columbia. this happened around 11:00 this morning. so we're a couple hours removed from it, but authorities say they do believe the suspected gunman is among the dead. police do not have information yet on the identity or motive, but they're confident this was a single shooter. there are no other shooters in the mall, they say. meantime, authorities are still trying to secure that mall. >> our s.w.a.t. teams getting a lot of support at the local, state and federal level, frankly, are going through as we are holding this press conference, they are inside continuing to clear that mall to make sure there are no more victims. >> no more victims. police do say however they believe other people may still be in the mall because when the shooting started they just secured themselves and h
