i'm craig melvin. we start with the tragedy unfolding off the southern coast of south korea, where a ferry sank two days ago now. search and rescue is under way for the 271 passengers. most of them high school students who were still missing. at least 25 people have been confirmed dead so far. and now new reports this morning that the high school principal who was rescued from the ferry has committed suicide. with hopes for more survivors fading, families of those missing frantically wait for any word on their loved ones. their frustrations are mounting. meanwhile, this dramatic amateur video has emerged showing passengers and in life jackets, inside the tilting ferry. delaying evacuation, an announcement can be heard telling the passengers not to move, but to stay in place. the investigation so far revealed that almost none of the ship's lifeboats were deployed, even though one apparently carried the ship's captain to safety. and now prosecutors are seeking an an arrest warrant for that captain. cover

i'm craig melvin in for chris jansing. we start with breaking news on this thursday.nute now we are expecting a news conference in lemoyne, pennsylvania where we expect to learn more about the american doctor and the three other americans who were shot at a hospital in afghanistan. authorities say a rogue afghan guard opened fire inside a children's hospital in kabul. that hospital is run by an american agency called cure international. the news conference in lemoyne is going to be held at the headquarters of cure and there is the doctor. our chicago affiliate has confirmed that the doctor killed is dr. jerry umanos. the other two victims, a father and son who were guests of dr. umanos. his wife was also shot and hurt. he is in critical condition in the same hospital he attacked. we should report that after the hospital attack in kabul, two civilians were killed. another 13 were hurt including six soldiers when a motor bike packed with explosives went off in the capital of the southern provence of zabul. joining me now is lauren petty. she's with our nbc station in ch

i'm craig melvin. good saturday afternoon to you. we start this hour with the very latest on that ferry disaster in south korea. right now at least 32 are dead. nearly 270 others are still missing. most of the missing are teenagers, high school students. and hope is fading fast this afternoon that anymore survivors will be found. nbc chief global correspondent bill nealy is in jindo, south korea, for us. >> reporter: hello, craig. from a place of deep sadness, sorrow, and frustration as many of the parents of these missing children are beginning to give up hope that those children might be found alive. they did, however, hear for the first time really an explanation from the captain of the ship, who was paraded before the cameras when he was arrested and formally charged. he apologized to the parents, and he explained that the reason he didn't order an early evacuation was that he feared that the passengers in their life vests, if they jumped into the water because there were no lifeboats around, he said, might just drift away. along

i'm craig melvin. we start with the latest on the desperate search in the waters off south korea. now divers are trying to headache it through the wreckage of the sunken ferry. the death toll is up to 58. at least 240 are still missing. meanwhile there is new information this afternoon on the final moments aboard the ship before the accident. transcriptses revealed disagreements between ferry crew members and officials on land. the officials wanted an immediate evacuation. the crew was worried passengers would not be rescued if in time. bill, what's the latest. >> reporter: hello, craig. after four days of frustration and failure divers have now found several ways to get into the sunken ship so the pace of the operation here has quickened and the death toll is rising. the dives -- hundreds of them -- are using axes to smash windowses and get with into the passenger area for the first time. establishing with ropes, a passageway. five separate ways to bring the bodies out of there. for some of the relatives that's a huge relief. they want their children out of the water. why wasn't
