i'm craig melvin if for jose diaz-balart. we start "the rundown" with latest developments the shooting's of aen armed black man by a police officer and could be getting another very important piece of this story. police today say they may be releasing the dashcam video from the incident from the officer's own car. meanwhile, north charleston's mayor has announced that every single police officer in the city of roughly 100,000 will be wearing body cameras. and officer michael slager charged with the murder of walter scott, has now been officially fired, and now also has a new lawyer. the shocking images of a man running away from police being shot in the back also rekindling the national debate about excessive force by police. in just a minute we'll show you my exclusive interview with feidin santana, the video seen by millions across the country and across the world as well. first i want to walk you through the timeline. the timeline of the tragic events now being investigated by state and federal officials. the deadly encoun

earlier today, my colleague, craig melvin, got to talk to the man who actually shot that piece of video. take a listen. >> what did you see is? and what did you do? >> i saw in the video, the shooting. you know, after the victim was dead. before i was walking to my job. i was walking to my job, and i witnessed mr. scott coming out of the -- coming out of -- >> running? >> yeah, running. and then i saw maybe five seconds later a cop after him, chasing him. yelling at him to stop. my first thought, you know, i thought that something would happen about it, so i just went to the scene to see what's going on. i saw him, you know, that they were on the floor. i didn't know if he just fell down. i see he was down and the police was up, trying to get control of him. i approached to the scene, when i see that, you know, this was p -- >> you saw the police tase him? >> yes. you can hear the sound before i started the video. i just decide to take my phone out. you know, maybe to try to see that the cop was over there standing there, you know. i started recording. that's when everything happened. >

nbc's craig melvin joining us with more on that emotional meeting. craig? >> reporter: richard, good morning to you. 23-year-old feidin santana, the young man, dominican-born barber who shot that video actually first showed it to some of scott's family the day after the shooting wanting them to see precisely how it was their loved one died and thursday evening it was a gut-wrenching, emotional reunion. >> i said god -- >> reporter: a grateful mother in raw emotion thursday at the scott family met the man who turned their son's tragic death into a national fogel point. >> good job. good job. >> a good thing. >> reporter: feidin santana, the 23-year-old whose cell phone video seen by millions had a simple message for about a dozen of walter scott's family. >> is there anything you want to say to the family, to the children, to walter's parents? >> just that they know the truth and they know that mr. scott you know like i say, this didn't just happen and stay that way. god put me there for a reason. i'm a very big believer in god. he put me there. >> he was su

nbc's craig melvin is here again, good morning.. >> let's take a look at the timeline here jose. thank you so much. let's start with roughly 12:10 just after noon yesterday, police warned that gangs are targeting law enforcement. they noted three gangs specifically, the black gorilla family, the bloods the crypts. after 12:10, fast forward, 4:00 roughly, these are rough times, rioters seen throwing rocks, throwing bricks bottles at law enforcement. this is, of course after the funeral of 25-year-old freddie gray. 45 minutes later roughly seven police officers were hurt by the time everything wrapped up. some 15 officers would ultimately be injured. 15 minutes later, 5:00 yesterday evening, cvs stores a cvs store in particular becomes overrun with people running out with items, those are sort of the first images that we got of the looters. shortly after that after 5:00 we fast forward to just about 6:00 protesters seen looting a check cashing business as well. this is in west baltimore, and again, we should note you see this image h

joining us now from north carston, south carolina nbc news correspondent craig melvin. > reporter: i just heard you talk about him, faden santana. the way that he walked to work every day and says he was walking to work that morning, and he heard at first the officer, mr. scott, in an exchange and he immediately whipped out his camera and took the video we've all seen. it was also very interesting to hear him talk about precisely why he considered strongly considered deleting that video. he said he feared for his safety. he also told me at one point he went to the police station here in north charleston and essentially said officers i was there. i've seen the local coverage. i read the police report. what you're saying and what i'm hearing doesn't match what happened. i have video to support that and the officers basically said to him, whoa whoa. really? officer leaves. officer comes back and says wait right here, and at that point he basically told me that he knew how that movie was going to end. he hopped up left the police station and got an attorney. this is just --

the man who captured the shooting death of walter scott on video tells craig melvin what he did after he witnessed the officer open fire and why he went to scott's family. >> i saw the police report. i read it. it wasn't like the way they were saying. >> reporter: you read the police report? >> yes. i saw on the news. i said, no this is not the right -- this is not what happened. i had a friend of mine and i showed him and tell him what i witnessed. he was agreed with me. so he told me think about what you want to do with this like i say. i just put myself in the position of the family, you know, that i know if i would have a family member like i say, i wouldn't know -- i couldn't tell what was going to be the decision in this case if the police would be charged or not. but i want them to have this and do something about it. because i know if i wouldn't give it to them, nothing would happen. >> reporter: are you still scared? >> yeah. like i say, i feel like i did the right thing for the family. i believe that this can help other people, you know, to -- like i say, to not do this kind

. >> joining me, craig melvin, msnbc anchor and national correspondent for the "today" show, a south carolina native. phenomenal interview. this young man, 23 years old, in case people didn't quite get the arc of what he said, i want to sort of highlight, he takes a video. >> yeah. >> he considers erasing it from his phone because he was scared of what would happen to him. >> he thought about leaving town because he's so scared. >> he's holding something that is possibly dangerous. he then sees the police coverage, the police report and local news coverage that characterizes the officer saying he was fearful for his life. that prompts him to walk into the police office. >> he goes to the station. and says, hey, i've got this video. i shot this video. you should know. and the officer suspiciously, you know, really? you really have this video? at some point the officer becomes convinced he doesn't have it. and says to him, wait right here. >> he doesn't show it to him. he says he has it. >> says he has it. the officer says, right here. the officer leaves, and santana basically told me

recall came last month when several deaths were connected to ice cream contaminations, but as nbc's craig melvinted samples. >> reporter: the blue bell creameries' nationwide recall includes ice cream, sher bert and frozen snacks distributed in 23 states and international locations. monday's decision was prompted by tests that proved the half gallons produced on march 17th and march 27th contained listeria. the u.s. centers for disease control and prevention showed tests showed products from tests in texas and oklahoma were the source of the listeria outbreak that infected five adults in kansas, three of whom died and has sickened another three adults in texas. blue bell's chief executive and president apologized in a videotaped message posted on the company's website. >> we are heartbroken over this situation and apologize to our fans and customers. >> reporter: estimated about 1,600 cases of listeria happen every year in the united states, resulting in about 268 deaths. headaches, nausea fever, abdominal pains, and diarrhea. generally short lived symptoms in healthy people but can be especiall

my colleague craig melvin spoke with faden santana who described what he saw before he started filming. >> i just went to the scene to see what was going on and when i saw him, you know that they were on floor, saying he may have fell down or tackled by the police. i saw he was down and the police was up trying to -- to get control of him and i approached the seen and when i see that the police was pushing him and tasering him. >> so you saw the police toys him? >> you can hear the sound before i started with the video. i never thought that the police would shoot him right at scene. like i say, man was running away from the police. he -- i believe that maybe he was scared of the taser, you know maybe like he was hurt by the tears, and he just was looking for a way to -- to get away from the police. >> did you hear the officer say anything before he fired the shots? >> no not really. >> well craig joins me now from north charleston there in south carolina. craig. feidin santana also told you that he considered erasing this footage. think about where we'd be without it but fearing his li

and that was when he told craig melvin he decided i know how this is going to end. and he bolted. and thank goodness he bolted and ended up getting the video into the hands of media and to the scott family. so that we could all see what rpd happened. your last guest was talking about the police report between the the last incident that michael slager was involved in. when you read the police reports in the walter scott killing, you don't get any kind of information. when you try to match it up against what we see in the video, it's total fabrication. >> joy, that notion that jonathan points out. the action bolting, leaving police headquarters with the video because he thinks that's the right decision to make. generally, the conventional wisdom is that was the right decision to make. that's a real indictment of the north charleston police department. which it must be noted. has 209 suspects. not just charleston. south carolina. 209 suspects shot by police in south carolina, between 2010 and 2014. you're on the ground there. what is the -- is there some ap pit for reopening any of t

msnbc's craig melvin is in north charleston with more for us. craig, let's start with that 2013 incident. tell us more about your interview with mr. santana. >> let's start with the incident. march mario gibbons is the man's name. he held a news conference a couple hours ago here and recounted a night back in 2013 when officer slager showed up and according to mr. gibbons pulled him from his house without asking his name without giving a great deal of information about why he was there and used his taser on him. there was a neighbor who corroborates some of this. a complaint was filed. gibbons files a complaint against the officer. law enforcement investigated it and decided that at that point, charges were not warranted. so at this point, you have a lot of folks who are starting to dig through the history of officer slager. so going back to the gentleman who's by the way being hailed as a hero in this community, feidin santana, the gentleman who shot that video, as you indicated, abby, this is the route he took to work every day. he's a local ba

alexander, the young man that taped this on his cell phone, called to our craig melvin and he said heerased the tape. listen to this. >> i knew you know the magnitude of this. i tried to -- i even thought about erasing the video and -- >> reporter: why? >> i felt you know my life with this information, might be like say, in danger. >> dr. alexander, you remember the president's task force on 21st century policing. we talked a lot to the task force about cameras. what do you think when you hear him say he thought about erasing this tape? >> i'm just glad he did not. and we all are glad in this country, all of us who are watching this are glad he made the decision and had the courage to keep that piece of footage, and to share that footage appropriately, so that we all have this piece of effort which is -- had he not kept it all we would have had is just the word at this point of the officer, and the forensics evidence that would have been at the scene as well too, which could potential have been tampered with. >> my sense about that is this goes to the fear that african-american men ma
