. >> let's turn now to nbc's craig melvin in columbia, south carolina. craig, i know you just got there, so with fresh eyes, what does it look like to you? >> kate, it's unreal. you can't really describe it. i'm from here. i grew up, maybe 15, 20 minutes from where i stand right now. and i've spent some time talking to friends, folks i went to college with, people who have lost everything. i mean, literally everything. you see them walking out of their houses with pictures of their children, and just a few of the other memories that they're trying to salvage. this is a home here, these are the haileyes. they managed to get out in the nick of time. they have a 12-year-old son. around 5:00 sunday morning, the water started rising. they made a beeline for it. their 12-year-old boy had to hang on to this mailbox to keep from getting swept away by rushing water. that's why the mailbox is bent. there are a number of these. sink holes. this is just one street. and in this one street, i can tell you, one, two, three, four -- every house here complete loss. you st

what we'll tell you is don't let the sunshine fool you, but we are prepared. >> let me bring in craig melvin a native of the area, craig, you grew up here. i take it you've never seen anything like this in your lifetime in columbia, south carolina? >> chuck, i haven't. no one that i've talked to here has. and that's one reason why so many people here just don't have flood insurance. and certainly don't have the kind of flood insurance that someone who lives along the coast like in charleston might have. 7 of the 14 who died here in south carolina, died drowning. and everyone i've talked to, they said variations of the same thing. it wasn't just the sheer amount of the water. it was the speed at which it came. one of the dams that they were concerned about, the windsor dam, about 15, 20 minutes from here, they're not as concerned as they were earlier today. it looks as if that dam will hold. we're in a neighborhood, this is over gills creek area. we're standing where the haileyes lived. and i say "lived" because it's going to be a while before they can again. they managed to get out just in t

nbc's craig melvin is live for us in columbia, south carolina, with all of the latest. craig, what's going on down there right now? >> reporter: ayman, i can tell you that the pictures and the video you just showed don't really do the scene justice. i grew up here, went to high school 15, 20 minutes away. no one who's lived here for any measurable amount of time has seen anything like this in the city of columbia. a number of the folks i've talked to all said the same thing. it wasn't the sheer amount of water, it was the speed in which the water came into their homes, rushed down their streets, came into these neighborhoods. i'm on a block here, i can tell you, i've talked to eight different homeowners. none of the homes in this particular block right now are salvageable. everyone has had to leave the homes. they've taken all their valuables with them. the insurance adjustors are coming. they're going to try to rebuild here. that's the scene across much of columbia, south carolina. i want to give you a look right now, high above the devastation. this is not far from whe

we'll return you to craig melvin and the regular coverage in just a moment.of it, of course, surrounding the tragic news we got yesterday that was also somehow a dual headline with yesterday's 11-hour appearance on capitol hill by hillary clinton. and that is that for the first time since 2011 our country suffered a combat death, a combat death in iraq. it was this young, just a month shy of his 40th birthday, master sergeant named joshua wheeler and the defense secretary has been talking about him and about the mission. the news of this event is that despite and in tandem with whatever we have heard from the president, the defense secretary is telling americans this is going to happen. in effect. there are going to be more of these missions and while we don't have any combat troops per se in kind of the classic sense in iraq, we do have visiting combat troops. they come in and out on missions like this one. and he said, about the united states military, we have this capability and everyone should know that americans are at risk. now, having said that, let's

craig melvin is there. good morning. >> jose, good morning to you. seen in that video, senior deputy ben fields will be relieved of duty. that announcement is expected to come at a 12:00 news conference this afternoon here. again, he is the deputy that was seen monday in an algebra 1 classroom approaching a female student in class and we've all seen the video over the past few days. i spent about 30 minutes with long-time sheriff leon lott yesterday and he told me when he first saw the video he watched it through the eyes of a father. he has three daughters, in fact, i went to school with two of his oldest daughters but the video, "made him want to throw up." i got the impression yesterday that this was the decision that was probably farther along than we realized. but senior deputy ben fields expected to be fired, relieved of duty shortly after noon today. as you know, the video itself has gone viral and the reaction to that video has been swift. lots of folks weighing in. at this point we have reached out to deputy fields on numerous occasions. we

grayi craig melvin is there with the latest. >> reporter: the allegations as you mentioned, startling any basketball program, one of the most storied programs in this country, and its hall of fame coach rick petinno. over the past few days denying allegations that he had any knowledge of precisely what was going on. let's talk about what was allegedly going on. according to a former escort, she would, with the knowledge of one of the staffers named andre mcgee, would essentially provide parties to star recruits. these recruits would come into town and, according to a book that came out on friday, she would organize these parties where there would be strippers and after the stripping, they would also be sex. the question now, one of the major questions, who was providing that money. there are multiple investigations going on right now. the ncaa investigating these allegations. the school investigating the allegations. so are local authorities. take a listen to what powell told outside the lines exclusively yesterday about exactly what went on here at the university of louisville. take
