as craig melvin mentioned, right before the top of the hour, our thoughts and prayers and concerns today, right this minute, are with a former president and a former first lady. george h.w. bush 41 and barbara bush are both hospitalized, both in methodist hospital in houston, texas. though, the medical circumstances of the former president took a bad turn overnight and into the morning. they had to sedate the former president to clear his airway, both former president and former first lady are hospitalized for respiratory issues. white house correspondent chris jansing is standing by with an update on all of it. >> reporter: let me start with what i think we'll hear from the president, which is expressing his concern for former president goenchts h.w. bush, and barbara bush. he suffers from a form of parkinson's. he's been hospitalized before with breathing problems. any time you're 92 years old and you have a problemlike pneumonia, it is cau concern, they did put him in the icu. and barbara bush also, as you said, hospitalized. she is suffering from fatigue. so, we will obviously keep y

craig melvin is up next here on msnbc. >> that was a fascinating conversation with the vice president andrea millimitchell. good morning. >> all eyes are on capitol hill this afternoon. confirmation hearings for three of president-elect donald trump's top choices for cabinet positions. those hearings wrapping up just moments ago. in the hot seat today the president-elect's nominees for head of the cia, secretary of defense, and secretary for housing and urban development. let us start with mike pompeo, one of two men today hoping to serve on the president-elect's national security team. the kansas congressman is trump's pick to lead the cia. he and other leaders of the intelligence community have a unique challenge. trump is off to quite the contentious start with our intelligence community. just wednesday you might remember he compared them to nazis. here are just some of the highlights from the pompeo hearing. >> the central intelligence agency will play a role for this administration it has for every previous administration. i'm confident the president-elect trump will not only acc

craig melvin was interviewing him. he's an eyewitness who said he saw a .9-millimeter gun. >> that's the very most common kind right now. that's probably one of the most popular firearms in america. that refers to the size of the round. very common gun. and it's the kind that would take the -- the rounds would be in a clip. >> a cartridge. >> cartridge or magazine, as they're called. witnesses have said he stopped to reload. so, you simply press a button on the side of the weapon. the clip falls out. you put a new new one in. and you preload those magazines or clips so that you don't have to stand there and put the rounds in. so it's a very fast thing and that's apparently why he was able to get off shots before the authorities finally confronted him. >> and in terms of how he got into the terminal, eyewitnesss have told us that he came in from an out r door into that baggage claim area. and flew in on a flight from canada into a different terminal now and went outside and got his gun ready and came into this terminal.

i'm craig melvin live from washington, d.c., just steps away from the capitol. the center of all the action today on a very busy day, all while preparations are in overdrive for donald trump's presidential inauguration happening less than 48 hours from now. on the hill today, hearings for four of trump's cabinet nominees, his picks to head health and human services, commerce, the epa, and u.n. ambassador, as well. all of them facing questions from senate committees on the hill. we have our reporters fanned out across america, from coast to coast, as folks around the country gear up for the inauguration. we'll get their take on what they want to see from the president-elect in just a few moments. but let's start, let's start with those hearings. today's cover three men, one woman, all of them charged with carrying out some of president-elect's trumps biggest campaign promises. repealing obamacare, a massive infrastructure bill, repealing environmental regulations, and working with allies to defeat isis, as well. kasie hunt and kelly o'donnell are on capitol hill.

i am going hand things off for the moment to my colleague, craig melvin whose returned. and i'll be back here in a bit. >> we'll sue you back here in an hour. thank you again. live pictures there. this is the tarmac of florida -- excuse me, ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport. this has been the scene on that tarmac for some time now. we've spoken to a number of people who are in that crowd, hundreds if not more than a thousand, most of them are passengers, but you also see sop airport personnel. some members of law enforcement. medical staffers as well on that tarmac. roughly three hours ago, 26-year-old man walked in through the baggage claim area of terminal two and opened fire indiscriminately. that the point, five people are dead, eight people injured, a number of folks on their way to the hospital. at the hospital i should say. at this point.
