our buddy is craig shirley his fantastic new book the search for reagan. g why did you ride this book and how would it impact us today? >> i wrote it because there are so many lies spouted about reagan over the years. i want to refute the lies by the left of reagan's intellect and his compassion in this handling of gorbachev and so many issues but i wanted to write it because i wanted to explore reagan's considerable intellect and his considerable comment -- compassion both of which he had. >> i feel like a lot of republicans and conservators think the world began with them. by the way that's how mark ceased a thing. we conservators believe history is crucial. ronald reagan won the two biggest landslides in the republican party history and he was a conservative. how did he do that? >> don't forget he was a democrat for many years long before he was a republican soap he spoke to democrats, cultural democrats and economic democrats and the way they had never heard about before and not from gerald ford or richard nixon's that he was able to reach conservative

the blue, wb is there is a very democratic centre area but so -- then again so is new jersey -- craig shirleyates and your -- the performance can confound. the fact that the former president is gunning for these locales, sometimes it's the case in new york -- is limited to how far he can go but it could work for him. what is your sense? >> it's very smart politics, neil. i can think of many times were candidates actually -- [inaudible] reagan in 1980 was in new york city, campaign in new york city the weekend before the election and a few weeks ago he was in the south bronx and in new jersey. on the other hand [inaudible] which was [inaudible] there was nowhere he was going to wrench california away from [inaudible] advertising dollars to california so [inaudible] it's good for momentum, it's good for morale, it's good for money. is -- it gives people -- get focus on other things, you know, trump -- >> neil: i'm sorry, grey cup were having some issues here -- the one thing i did notice when you talk about ronald reagan campaigning in the south bronx of course he famously kicked off his campai
