craig whitlock is an investigative reporter for "the washington post", author of "the afghanistan papers certain frustration with the reaction to this insofar as this has been something very common throughout the war on terror and has been largely occluded from the consciousness of the american public by and large. >> you know, what was unusual about this case, chris, is that there was such extensive evidence collected by news media organizations in terms of surveillance video and witness statements that showed very clearly that the targets here were not terrorists, that this was an aid worker and his family, that the pentagon's account of what happened originally just didn't stand up to scrutiny. that's because this happened in kabul and there were lots of reporters around, but most of the airstrikes and drone strikes in afghanistan and other places occurred in rural areas where there's no journalists there to witness it, where they can only come in days later. so what is unusual about this case is that there was essentially video of what happened and it was pretty well documented that

. >> in 2016 craig whitlock, a veteran staff reporter for the "washington post," received a tip aboutnto the war in afghanistan known as the lessons learned project. led by special inspector general john sabko. >> it's fact versus fantasy. this is this problem that we identified early on. this odor of mendacity. there was this exaggeration after exaggeration of what we accomplished. >> after a court battle to obtain the hundreds of secret interviews conducted by sabko's team the "washington post" won. and whitlock published his findings in a series of reports known as the afghanistan papers. later expanded into a book. what these interviews and the lessons learned project revealed, he says, was a far different history of the war in afghanistan than the one the american people had been told. >> the non-watered-down version was it was much worse than you thought in afghanistan. >> freedom is taking hold in afghanistan. >> we are prevailing. >> we're winning, but the war's not yet been won. >> do you think that all the public officials that were saying positive things about the war were

now, thanks to the investigative journalism of craig whitlock of "the washington post," the afghanistan papers added another layer to the inspector general's reports, revealing evidence that high-ranking officials in the department of defense, in the state department and the white house knew that the u.s. mission had no focus, no metrics, no clear coordination, and no defined enemy. douglas lute, a three-star army general who served as the afghanistan war czar under president bush and president obama, is quoted in the published interviews saying, quote, we were devoid of a fundamental understanding of afghanistan. we didn't know what we were doing, close quote. well, i share the view with the majority of americans that withdrawing forces from afghanistan was the right choice and was by all accounts inevitable at some point. the biden administration's disastrous withdrawal was the culmination of american failure in afghanistan. kabul fell to lawlessness and mass panic. afghan security forces laid down arms to the taliban. afghan president fled the nation. potential terrorists, men with c
