i'm jessica flores in walnut creek.e in front of the burned down home on mandarin lane where fire investigators are inside currently trying to determine what sparked the blaze that killed an elderly man who was living inside. the fire started at 12:45 a.m. here. contra costa fire arrived to find heavy smoke and flames from the windows. elderly parents lived with their adult son in the home. the fire already consumed the home and killed the elderly man by the time they arrived. that found thethe body was on the second floor. the mother and son escaped before the firefighters arrived. they went to the hospital with smoke inhalation and lacerations. right now crews believe the fire started on the first floor. >> we just kind of wrapped up the overhaul stage of making sure there's no rekindle. so right now we are investigating, identifying specifically exactly where that fire started. >> reporter: unclear right now if the home had smoke detectors. fire investigators will be here for several hours this morning. reporting liv

if you take a walk down along the santa rosa creek trail, you'll find several burned areas just like this one, freshly burned. police say someone set this fire and 12 others on purpose. people who live near here say they are nervous. freshly burned grass along the santa rosa creek trial right behind homes has people who live here on edge. >> everybody is kind of spooked nervous about it. >> reporter: eight months after the deadly wildfires destroyed thousands of homes in santa rosa, people are nervous about neighborhood. someone set 13 fires in two hours in west santa rosa starting around midnight saturday. >> helicopters flying overhead and they s a bit. >> reporter: he woke up to the sound of a police helicopter searching for a suspect while fire crews worked to douse 13 fires. firefighters managed to prevent them from spreading. people who live near the creek trail are anxious for an arrest, concerned about a small fire taking off into homes. >> but it's scary, you know, because we didn't have to leave when the fires hit, but i had friends that lost houses. >> reporter: santa rosa

right now, an investigation into a deadly fire in walnut creek. it broke out at a home on mandarin lane just before 1:00 this morning. kpix 5's jessica flores reports. >>> reporter: good morning. we are in front of the home that was burned down and right now investigators are inside trying to piece together exactly how this fire started. you can see in the front lawn, burned chairs and couches, all that burned furniture. this home is a total loss. and inside is where fire crews discovered one man dead and then they found two people outside who escaped the fire. contra costa fire says elderly parents lived with their adult son in the home. and at this point, investigators aren't releasing the name of the victim but say he is the elderly father. fire crews went into rescue mode but the fire already consumed the home and killed the man inside by the time they arrived. fire officials say this appears to be a total loss. >> upon arrival, we had heavy smoke and flames coming from the first story of a two-story home shooting out from all three sides of t
