cristian benavides joins us from cedar key, florida, with a firsthand look at the devastation left behind by idalia. that area got hit pretty hard, cristian. >> reporter: good morning. in fact, this small town of just about 1,000 full-time residents experienced a record storm surge of nearly 7 feet. but residents and businesses most affected are vowing to rebuild. overnight, a weaker idalia moved over the carolinas, bringing heavy rain and storm surge flooding. >> a lot of wind. a lot of rain. nothing too crazy. nothing that we expected. >> reporter: similar in southern georgia where storm's strong winds toppled this basketball net and snapped off tree limbs. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: but in florida, wherel idalia first came ashore as a powerful category 3 storm, there is a trail of de instruction in coastal towns. >> you want to live on the water, you've got to put up with it. >> reporter: this video captures the moment the storm surge demolished a home. residents are now surveying the damage. >> what matters is what i'm holding. >> reporter: cleanup efforts underway around the state

cristian benavides has the latest from crystal river, florida. >> the water keeps coming. >> reporter idalia's powerful and in some places record-breaking storm surge is submerging parts of florida's gulf coast. homes and streets in cedar key are now underwater from a surge forecasters they could hit 16 feet high. at leas 230,000 homes lost power. >> power crews have restored over 100,000 accounts overnight in the last eight hours. >> reporter: timber was spared direct hit, but is feeling the impact, water is spilling over the city's causeway and there is also significant flooding on the streets of st. petersburg . and crystal river we have been experiencing bands of rain and fierce wind, as the storm moves through. everyone is watching the water and how high you will go. >> unfortunately, we have not seen the worst of what the storms impacts want to be for citrus county. >> reporter: even though idalia is moving overland, forecasters warn the storm is still a major threat . >> we will see the storm surge and potential for damaging winds, extending well inland al the way across portio

cbs news cristian benavides is live in cedar key, florida with more on the situation.ou. and i see behind you just so much destruction. have clean-up efforts begun yet or is weather still too problematic? >> reporter: nicole, good morning. clean-up efforts have started in the sense that people are now going to assess the damage that the storm has left behind. remember, this was a quick moving hurricane. now i just want to sort of point your attention to what's going on right behind me. i mean, this is sort of the devastation that we're seeing around here. now this is cedar key. and that was the far away inn right behind me. you can see that the cottage there was just completely destroyed. now there are a couple of cottages behind that that did -- the structure did survive but there's a wall on the ground and there's just too much water damage to just sort of say that the other ones were okay. i mean, you got to think this was 7 feet of storm surge that went through this area. cedar key is a small community. just about 700 full-time residents that live here. officials s

reporter cristian benavides was in the miami courtroom and brings us the very latest. >> reporter: carlos de oliveira faces charges, including conspiracy to obstruct justice and lying to investigators. he did not answer questions before or after the brief hearing monday morning in miami. prosecutors say de oliveira conspired with trump and trump aide walt nauta to try to delete security footage while investigators were looking into the former president's handling of classified documents. >> the justice department unfortunately decided to bring these charges against mr. de oliveira. now it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is. >> reporter: the judge read the charges against de oliveira, but he did not enter a plea because he does not yet have a florida-based attorney. former president trump, who faces new charges in this case but has already pleaded not guilty to 37 counts, says that the tapes were not deleted "in any way, shape, or form." >>> meanwhile the former president could face even more charges this week. special counsel jack smith has been conducting a wide rang

the cbs correspondent cristian benavides joined us from florida. we're in crystal river.eeing a lot of the effects from this hurricane. you can see behind me, things are relatively calm. we do get some of those bands of rain and wind from time to time. but the main, the primary concern here is going to be the potential for life—threatening storm surge. to give you some perspective, we're in a building that's elevated about ten feet off the ground — or off sea level, rather. but there are many homes that are at sea level here where officials have already been clear that you need to evacuate because they're anticipating 10 to 12 feet of storm surge in this area. now, that's according to the national weather service. in fact, they believe it's 7 to 12 feet. i'm not sure about the metric system conversion there, but we feel that by driving around, just being around town here, it looks like a ghost town. so the hope is that a lot of the folks either left or are hunkering down in an area where they're going to be safe enough. in fact, at this hotel, we've encountered a couple o

cristian benavides is live and you are in crystal river this morning. >> reporter: reed, good morningt's absolutely right. and yo know, we'll get feeder bands from time to time. and at that point, we'll see heavy rain and strong winds. but main primary concern in this area is the potential for deadly storm surge. and in fact, officials are saying this storm will be a once in a lifetime event for certain parts of florida. stron winds, torrential rain florida felt the effects of hurricane idalia even before making landfall today. >> do not go outside in the midst of the storm. wherever yo are hunker down and don't take anything for granted here. this is a very, very powerful storm. >> reporter: a state of emergency has been declared and evacuation orders issued for dozens of florida counties. wit deadly storm surges expected to reach as high as 15 feet in som areas. >> if you do choose to stay, in one of the evacuation zones, first responders will not be able to get to you until after the storm has passed. >> reporter: many floridians have heeded those warnings. >> i just feel like no o
