we have done training around the city a partnership with the red cross. one challenge was people showing up. we did advertising and people didn't necessarily come to the presentations. because it requires more than putting up a sign and it requires more contact than our department has. people in the building have to encourage their neighbors to come to these trainings. back to disaster kits. we have a grant from the hospital council to purchase disaster buckets from the red cross. it's not many. our focus is on low income families. family and child care providers. we are looslooking at organizeds like day care centers and providing them with supplies. so they're available after a disaster. that's one way we are addressing that. >> did you have a follow up to that? >> you keep saying turn off the gas. i've tried to get a hold of pg and e. a lot of the meters have frozen nuts or whatever you want to it. i tried to get pg and e to look at the one in my house and says it's impossible to shut off. how do we get pg and e to address the fact the old meters in fr

if we can, the deal street cross -- the next weekend, the bill street crossing, as you know, that ralphwas put in 10 or 15 years ago. both of those overpasses came down over that weekend. there was a removal of the overpass. by the end of the second week in, the notice to proceed, they have cleared the temporary terminal site as well as the two crossings. here they are working about two weeks ago. that work will be completed. as far as a time line, to give you an idea of what is coming next, the fremontó[ street, wee working northwest across veal street, so that will be the next street crossing. in two weeks, we will close that. about three weeks' worth of work. and then into the tempore terminal, starting at the east end and working across fremont by the end of october. utility relocation work, we hope to release that contract in october at the next board meeting, which will allow them to get started, and demolition will proceed through of the terminal. having to take any questions if there are any. >> i have a question. they may be covering it in the next couple killed leave. we also have the red cross truck here.have information this morning that they helped out about 38 people at the two shelters they had set up last night. they say that a lot of people ended up going with family and friends. we're also, if we can pan over here, waiting for a press conference to start to get new information. we're believing this may be the lieutenant governor coming here. that could happen any minute. a lot of people coming by wanting answers. we spoke with one woman a couple minutes ago, she said she had a couple relatives up there and hasn't heard from them. she is trying to get information on them. also people coming here wanting to know, as sad as it sounds, wanting to know if their home is still standing. they are wanting answers and the red cross can't answer that. oes is here, firefightering trying to learn what is going on. state farm, the insurance company, will be out in this lot helping out the people they cover trying to get them back on their feet. certainly a lot of activity this morning. a lot

the american red cross has 12 volunteers out here. many more spontaneous volunteers are still out here this morning. these volunteers came down to help last night, are in no way affiliated with the red cross. they started arriving last night and immediately got to work. a lot of organizing has to be done in a situation, the food and clothes brought in by the community needed to be sorted. that's one of the reasons why at this hour the red cross is asking for monetary donations. log on and send money in care of the san bruno fire effort. women dropped off diapers and baby formula, one of the women heard the loud explosion last night and as she watched the continuous coverage of what was going on she came down to donate. we also spoke to a man who heard the explosion and th took some action. >> we are a tight community. everybody knows each other and everybody went to school together and played sports together. when you see your neighbor's homes on fire and you know them you can pick out our friend's houses it's sad but it makes you wan

you can see behind me the red cross truck is here. they are certainly helping many of those people who had their homes either completely burned to the ground or had a lot of damage done to it. you can see some of the video there. dozens of homes that burned and more that are damaged. one person confirmed dead and dozens hurt. many people taking themselves to the hospital. some with severe burns, others with smoke inhalation, some in nearby hospital, others as far as san francisco. saint francis burn unit was treating some of the people last night. this is going to be a pretty difficult search operation, certainly not rescue but a search operation as cadaver dogs go through some of the rubble this morning. mainly, that's because many of the people if there are any left inside pretty much would have been incinerated. this fire was so hot, i was here last night that it just eliminated the houses almost instantly. you see skeletons, chimneys, ironically about the only things left standing sit on the ground n top of foundations. certainly

we are on glenn view that cro cross street is san bruno. if you zoom in, will you see a white glow of smoke. that's where the fire is contained. this person i spoke to said they were under the impression that this fire should be close to 100% contained by dawn. right now everything in that area that is going to burn has burned, according to him. in other words, the homes caught in that zone are gone. the foundations is all that remain. what they have is smoldering debris. his concern is that if the winds were to pick up, you could see another flair-up of flames. that's one reason for concern. that's why there are so many firefighters out here. 53 homes destroyed, more than 100 damaged. one person confirmed dead. there's another report that more people have been killed, but that's not been confirmed about 20 people were taken to the hospital last night. our understanding is that several of those people are still there in critical condition. this neighborhood caught fire, it blew up just after 6:00, around 6:15 last night. pg&e has confirmed

and we hired more crossing guards and put in more cross walks at schools and had the idea and these are all from the notes at the last pedestrian summit by the way, lighted cross walks were talked about and we have experimented with them and found some technical difficulties and hopefully that will improve to be maintained. that's problem with installations we've done. speed bumps were talked about and that was dormant for years but it has been revived. traffic calming program has been revitalized since passing of prop-k that has begun to provide funding for that. there are some ideas i wanted to call your attention to. speed radar signs that say the speed limit is such and such and these have been found to get people to slow down. we've experimented and had some interesting experiences with traffic circles. but we've learned a lot and this is part of the tool kit we have. some of the things we do are not necessarily new invasions but they're proven traffic engineering improvements. new signals. we constantly get requests for those at high traffic intersections. we've put in close t
