cross south carolina. and i then depart at the beginning of january, the 45 and i arrive in europe in towards the middle of january, the 17th. january, i'm in luxen burg. february 3, i cross the river. and on march 3, an interesting thing happened. you know a lot of the guys that were in the boats did not have good equipments. some of them just had summer clothes. they never had winter clothes they brought up a new kind boot that we were supposed to get. and the bottom of the boot was rubber and the top of the boot was leather. i didn't get one because they didn't have one to fit me. so i was wearing old-fashioned combat boots with galoshes with the clips on the side. the problem with these new boots is that they didn't breathe. so guys that were wearing these boots, moisture built up in the boot and a lot of them wound up with trench foot. i never had trench foot. so i was pretty lucky. now on march 9, on march 6, rather, they took us week in rear echelon and they took us back. enormous tent that was heat

that's where i fell in love with cross-hatching. the bar, it's a wonderful collections of cartoons that spans a lot of decades, in fact, a century, and it goes back to another one of the great grandaddies of political cartooning, kepler, who drew for -- i think was actually a publisher, one of the joint owners of "puck" magazine. in is in the golden age of political cartooning. kepler would do these beautiful color lithographs that would be two-page spreads for "puck" magazine. if you remember your american history books, you know, there's the wonderful standard oil cartoon of the oil tank with tentacles of the octopus of rockefeller reaching out. to call it a cartoon is almost putting it down because it was a real work of art. i mean, it was like an oil painting. actually done as a color lithograph. there's a couple of keplers here from "puck" magazine. those are probably the oldest ones in the bar. and then these ed vaultman be and ron covington, who's over in this corner, would be sort of the next ones. the vaultman cart tooons a

so we've got about 200 crossing guards. we have about 200 crossing guards all over the city and their schedules are concentrated at the beginning of school and the end of school and they're very popular. they're much beloved in the community and i say high to harvey milk academy crossing guards. or at least i did when there was still school in session. and, so part of the question is, do we use our limited resources in order to expand the number of crossing guards and the number of schools that they can serve or to expand their hours. in talking to the crossing guards, most of them are retired people. they're doing this to keep busy and contribute to their community. they and the schools were really clear that they wanted to see more crossing guards and more schools rather than paying crossing guards during the middle of the day. frankly we don't have that much work to do for them that our parking control officers couldn't do so it's a situation where given limited resources, expanding the program best serves the public goo
