you look at what blacks were focused on coming out of slavery through reconstruction through jim crow. you compare the progress that was being made during that period with the post civil rights progress. what i find very interesting is how much progress was being made when to use the term, the previous caller, white supremacy, was much more embedded in american society that it is today. when it was legal to discriminate. when racism was widespread and rampant and legal. you look at the progress blacks are making and what you saw were racial disparities closing during this period. whether it was educational income, participation, employment and homeownership. you saw the white-black gap shrinking during this period. in the second half of the 20th century in the wake of the great society program and so forth you saw either a stall in that progress or some cases retroaggression. back in the time when blacks had no political power in this country, you saw racial gaps closing. narrowing. yet over a period where you saw black obtaining more political power in some cases you saw the reverse
