candy crowley joins me from washington now.rning home from military service are experiencing a lot of difficulties, aren't they? >> the figures are pretty astonishing. 1 in 4 deals with either substance abuse problems, ptsd, homelessness. look, most veterans come home and find a way to cope with the world that they find and move on to have very productive lives, but there are those particularly those coming back from what really has been the longest war counting iraq and afghanistan, who, after double and triple rotations into these war zones, are coming back with some serious problems. the va, by everyone we've talked to, said it has improved but it is not there yet in terms of getting some services to some of the these veterans who are really in need. one of the things that really had us sitting up straight was a statistic that showed in a year-long period, more veterans and active military kill themselves than died in combat. that's quite an eye-blinking number. we wanted to kind of look in and say, look, the best way to mem

i'm candy crowley. and this is state of the union. in his speech, president obama addressed the controversy from his thursday's speech. >> that was my reference to the 1967 alliance with mutually agreed swaps that received the lion's share of the attention, including just now. since my position has been misrepresented several times, let me reaffirm what 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps means. by definition, it means that the parties themselves, israelis and palestinians, will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on june 4th, 1967. that's what mutually agreed upon swaps means. it is a well-known formula to all who have worked on this issue for a generation. it allowed the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years. [ applause ] it allows the parties themselves to take account of those changes, including the new demographic realities on the ground and the needs of both sides. the ultimate goal is two states for two people. >> joining me now here in washington

i'm candy crowley and this is "state of the union." >>> despite fears a debt crisis will undermine the u.s. economic recovery and rattle the world, just 19% of americans told gallup pollsters they want congress to raise the debt ceiling. 47% no and 34% said they didn't know enough to say. minority leader senator mitch mcconnell, thank you for being here. first question out of the box -- what would happen if the debt ceiling is not raised? >> well, i think we ought to look at this as an opportunity. an opportunity to bring a democratic president who's been leading a spending binge over the last couple of years and a new much more republican congress which believes the american people want us to reduce spending significantly. bring those two together and get something done born on a bipartisan basis. you know, it is interesting that some of our biggest accomplishments in the last quarter of a century have been when you have divided government. think of ronald reagan and tip o'neill working together to save social security for another generation in 1983. think of bill clinton and the repu

business network sandra smith and fox news contributor nationally syndicated talk show host monica crowleyyou guys. >> hi; >> sean: not sure why almost immediately people ran to the 2012 election. but emails came in. i was just glad at the news. because it's important. but people are asking that question. does this impact 2012? >> oh, sure. look, war is the political act anyway. so, i think it could have an effect but, remember, wars always have unintended consequences. there is a million unexpected things that could happen. >> good and bad between now and 2012. one thing that this does do is give obama foreign policy or national security credentials that he may not have had in the past. but, remember, the lesson of history is that back in 1991, when we conducted the first persian gulf war, george h.w. bush was at 92% job approval and he lost re-election one year later. >> sean: great point. >> something about these polls we know polls represent what someone answers when asked a question right then. right? so it's more important to look at the overall trend. >> sean: snapshot. >> cbs "new
