. >>> let's dig deeper on what's going on with candy crowley, host of "state of the union" joining us now. candy, look at the latest poll numbers when it comes to tougher gun laws. do you favor major restrictions on guns or making all guns illegal? back in december, 52% said yes. now it's down to 43%. immediately after newtown, it was 52%. now it's gone down significantly. what's going on here? >> first of all, the internals of that poll show that rural folks answering this question are now back to thinking no, we don't need major gun legislation. and older people. so what's happening is, there has been some distance how the president frames it, we've forgotten the children. others say in the height of that horrible tragedy, people's emotions were on high and said yes, we have to get rid of all guns. now 100 days later, it's -- you know, they're saying let's do something that works. so which ever way you look at it, certainly when you look at an assault weapons ban, will there be a vote, but no one thinks it will pass. the question right now is these background checks, including gun s

south carolina senator lindsey graham talked exclusively with candy crowley, host of cnn's state of the> so long as he and others are allowed to amend the bill that is brought to the floor. a lot depends on the rules and what's agreed upon in terms of bringing it to the floor. it's interesting obviously that there are five republicans that have said we're going to ph filibuster this if it causes undue government surveillance of gun purchases. this is where the sticking point is. because in the gun negotiations going on, our gun control negotiations going on now, republicans have said the -- it isn't so much the background check at these gun shows as it is the paperwork that has to stay as a result of that background check with the sellers. they think that just really amounts to a national registry of guns which they believe is an undue burden and undue government intrusion into a second amendment right. that's what it's about and lindsey gram says as long as i can amend this -- you can see where he's going with this enforcement -- then i won't filibuster it. >> in your conversation with

i want to bring in our chief political correspondent, candy crowley.at's the inside discussion, the scoop, if you will, among republicans that are looking at this and thinking, okay, this doesn't sit well? we've been moving ahead making some progress. it is one step back. >> you don't have to go inside anything that's happening in secret. you kind of just have to look at your e-mail, incoming. you have to look at twitter. we've already heard from reince previs. john boehner said, i don't care what the excuse is here, what this means is an immediate apology. legislation came out and said, there needs to be an apology. john core nan who helps elect republicans to the u.s. senate came out and said to say. they are thinking, good heavens. it sort of hearkens back to bobby jindal, governor of louisiana, coming out and saying, we have to stop being the stupid party because so many statements that were deemed so outrageous during the campaign, that they just made headlines and took away from what republicans felt they were really trying to do on the good side

i'm candy crowley. and this is "state of the union". >>> the mass shooting at a school in columbine, colorado, and a movie theater in aurora often left the state in the unwelcomed center of the country's long debate about violence. this week the colorado governor found himself professionally and personally back in the middle again. first he learned that a good friend, colorado state prison chief tom clements, was gunned down in his own home. it was learned there soon after that a person of interest in the clements murder was an ex-con, the long troubled son of the close friend of the governor's. he died in a shootout with texas authorities following a high speed chase. he is now considered a suspect in the clements killing. authorities also suspect his involvement in the shooting death of a pizza delivery man in denver. wednesday as the tragically coincidental story unfolded, governor hickenlooper signed legislation aimed at cutting down on gun violence. the governor joins me now from colorado. governor

i want to bring in chief political correspondent candy crowley, anchor of cnn's "state of the union."andy, why is the president taking this trip now? is there anything to the timestamp? >> well, he isn't the first president to wait until his second term. i think you mentioned two of them, iran continued pursuit of nuclear weaponry is of great concern to both israel and the u.s. they have not been on the same page about when they think iran might acquire that capability. these are not netanyahu and israel and obama here not the best of friends. so anything they can do to kind of ease what has been kind of four years of tension between the two would be good so they get on the same page. egypt, you know, the arab spring and the transition from dictatorship, which might have been a dictatorship, but nonetheless certainly helped in terms of the middle east balance of power because it did have a peace treaty with israel. that hasn't gone so well. we're talking about the war in syria spilling over into israel. there's no shortage of things to talk about. and i think i would also just add tha
