"new york times" is reporting that the department of homeland security decided in recent months to delay action on an application for citizenship from the other suspected bomber, tamerlan tsarnaev. a routine background check revealed he was interviewed by the fbi in 2011 at the request of the russian government, which suspected that the older brother had ties to chechen terrorism. he was killed following a shootout with police early friday morning in boston. cnn's latest reporting shows 57 victims remain hospitalized as a result of the boston bombings including three in critical condition. joining me now is massachusetts senator, william his friends call him mo cowan. thank you, senator, for being with us out of boston. i want to is you what you know about the status of the investig

earlier i spoke to our candy crowley about what's at stake and what lies ahead. okay, candy, so the president heads to connecticut this week. he's hoping that programs connecticut's new gun laws will help him promote tougher national gun legislation? >> he's keeping the pressure up. and it is incumbent upon him to do it because he promised the families of newtown and other families of victims of gunfire that he would do it. whether the fact that connecticut, which is a heartbeat away from the tragedy in newtown, whether they're passing strict gun laws -- remember, they already had some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, somehow moves the u.s. senate where gun reform goes next on a federal level. it is a hard case to make but the president does know and toss feel that he has to make that case regardless of the outcome, simply because he has made so many promises to do so. so what he, frankly, has said and what some of those around him have said is, give me something that makes the situation better. maybe it won't be about assault weapons. connecticut had a b

. >>> i'm candy crowley and this is "state of the union." first we want to go to the latest on the boston bombings investigation. a u.s. official says russia wiretapped a 2011 conversation between the mother of one of the accused boston bombers and someone who may have been one of her sons discussing jihad. russia turned over the information to the fbi within the last few days. meantime, the fbi has wrapped up its search of a landfill near boston. investigators were looking for a laptop supposedly used by bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. it is believed the computer could hold information about the planning of the attack. the obama administration is defending the decision to inform the surviving suspect of his miranda rights. attorney general eric holder spoke with cnn last night. >> the decision to mirandize is one that the magistrate made and was totally consistent with the laws that we have. we had a two-day period that we were able to question him under the public safety exception, so i think everything was done appropriately and we got

crowley.ith the obvious question is how to state at this point fit into this investigation? >> well, clearly the tsarnaev family came to the united states from kyrgyzstan, kyrgyzstan has been an ally of the united states in the connection with afghanistan over the years. so -- but looking back at the visa process, and was there anything that came to light there. but i think primarily this is about the intelligence community and going back, you know, obviously we have the russia connection to exploit. and i think one of the more remarkable things here is the -- in terms of these international connections is to compare the two brothers and what seems to be the lack of a escape plan from, say, the times square bomber where faisal shahzad was literally pulled off an airplane. he'd received some support from the pakistani taliban and was presumably heading back after planting the bomb. it will explain the russia connection but checking through those who have a perspective on jihadi networks just to

i'm monica crowley in for sean. here is what learned for the past 24 hours. late last night, suspect number 2, dzhokhar tsarnaev, was transferred from the hospital to a federal prison medical center about 40 miles away from boston. meanwhile, according to the associated press, u.s. officials added the bombing suspect's mother's name to a federal terrorism database 18 months before the deadly attack. and today lawmakers told fox news that the mother has now become a, quote, person of interest. fox news also spoke to the mother directly and she said she is not planning to come to the u.s., but that her ex-husband might. she said the suspect's father was being taken to a hospital in moscow to deal with his, quote, nerves, head, stomach and elevated blood pressure. but she isn't the only family member that's raising concern. according to the weekly standard, law enforcement is questioning what role, if any, tamerlan's wife, kimberly russell, had, in regard to the bombings. she contacted her husband by phone after the f.b.i. released the surveillance video of the
