good afternoon from washington, i'm candy crowley. hours ago, the u.s. military upped the ante in iraq carrying out five separate air strikes against five separate targets. the heaviest activity since last week. i want to go to anna coren live in irbil. what can you tell us about the latest strikes? >> well, we are hearing from u.s. central command that they have carried out these air strikes on five separate targets over a period of about five hours today. taking out mortar positions as well as as armored trucks. we don't know how many of the isis militants they killed, but we understand those targets were certainly eliminated. this has allowed the kurdish forces, the peshmerga to move in and reclaim towns that were taken by isis a few days ago. so these counterattacks were then launched as a result of these air strikes. meaning those forces have moved in and liberated those towns that militants claimed just a few days ago. certainly boosting morale on the ground and having spoken a short time ago, he said the air strikes are welcome, but we need more o

i'm candy crowley. american fighter jets slicing through northern iraqi air space this weekend targeting islamic militants and their arsenals. president obama said he will not put an end date on this operation. i go to cnn's ana coren live in erbil. is there any sense the humanitarian crisis is easing and are the air strikes doing anything to hold back what has been a pretty consistent isis march forward? >> reporter: well, candy, we are getting reports the humanitarian aid drops are reaching the yazidis, the religious minority that are trapped on mt. sinjar. you have to remember they fled to that mountain several days ago with a lightning advance of isis. isis considers theia zoodis to be devil worshippers and they know they were facing slaughter. 40,000 of them fled to this mountain, they've had no food, no water or shelter, and you know, i have to point out, it is excruciatingly hot here. they've been going like this for days. there have been three humanitarian aid drops from the united states. the b

joining me now is jonathan allen and foreign affairs correspondent, michael crowley.in terms of the interesting position which is to say uncomfortable position these air strikes put both republicans and democrats. we have been talking a lot about rand paul and his strategy of not getting engaged and just what it creates inside the republican party. what do you imagine the broader response to be in the coming days? >> it's another test of this cleavage and the party is trying to finds out what its real direction is. the kind of interventionists have been very assertive. there was a time when people thought the rand paul view would prevail and polls go against for calling for more air strikes and intervention in the middle east. the wing of the party is not of the view that intervening in iraq didn't go so well and now we have to pipe down. but that fight is going to continue to play out and i think we're seeing one instance of it after another. there are some republicans focusing on the tactical question. john boehner's statement, for instance said the president doesn'
