new video in from the scene in crozet, virginia. these are live pictures from crozet.ctors are treating at least two people who were on the train for head injuries. now, we've said throughout this news hour that we have no reason to believe that anybody was critical and we still don't. we have of the understanding from talking to people on the train that some people were standing up when this happened. remember, they hit a trash truck at a crossing. it appears from the video that the crossing arm was down. we can't be sure of exactly what happened on this scene yet. the investigators will get in there and take a look at it. it was a jarring moment when they ran into the trash truck. anybody standing up could have been thrown around in there. we know that they don't have seat belts on those things. so a couple of head injuries. i mentioned the minnesota congressman, jason lewis was at the hospital for a possible concussion. a spokesman for paul ryan says that one of his staffers has a head injury. doctors are examining him. let's bring in congressman steve knight of cal

we go to griff jenkins now in crozet, virginia with the latest on what could have been. griff? >> hey, neil. that's right. just before 11:20 earlier today, we're at the scene of the tracks in crozet where the train, the amtrak train carrying the gop members and other passengers was heading westward. you can see beyond me, the carnage, the damage of the trash truck on the left side of these tracks here carrying three passengers, one fatality, one serious injury, one miraculously minor injuries. if you look beyond the train -- see the csx guys in the hard hat, neil? that was the front of the amtrak train that first came in contact with the truck. i'm not sure if the viewers can get the full view of this, neil. if you look where the trash truck is, it goes down a hill, a very steep hill. so what appears to have happened from authorities we know the train is going west that way. we know this trash truck was coming up the steep hill creating a big blind spot. although right now there are all sorts of authorities trying to determine this. the virginia department of emergency services

our kasie hunt reports from the scene in crozet, west virginia. >> mass casualty incident. level one. train versus truck. >> reporter: just charlottesville, virginia, at 11:20 this morning, a garbage truck split in two by a chartered amtrak train carrying hundreds of republican members of congress, their spouses and children, on the way to a policy retreat at the green briar resort. >> i personally was sitting and just felt the very strong jolt which shocked everybody. >> reporter: most on board the train including the house speaker paul ryan were not hurt. outside, lawmakers, several of them medicaldoctors, rushed to save the men driving the gash ask truck. >> i can't find a pulse. we started cpr. >> reporter: one man died at the scene. another in critical condition. >> so we were working on the man that was injured for quite a while, and for about 20 minutes, but he was breathing, obviously very serious condition. >> reporter: after the crash, amtrak said two crew members and two passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. authorities still investigating wh

that's because their ride to her retreat collided with the garbage truck on the tracks in the town of crozet. within minutes, as a strong electrical smell filled the cabin, the capitol police pleaded with any physicians on board to administer first aid to the most seriously injured. that's when a handful of legislators turned into lifesavers. among the doctors on board, louisiana senator bill cassidy, ohio congressman brad webster, texas congressman michael burgess, tennessee congressman bill rowe, and kansas congressman roger marshall who told us to the passengers in the truck require the most urgent attention. one could not be saved. space so we could not find a pulse. his pupils were fixed and dilated. that it was best to call the code and move our attention back to the first victim. >> five train passengers were taken to the university of virginia hospital for head injuries, including a staffer for house speaker paul ryan and a representative from minnesota, congressman jason lewis, who was evaluated for a concussion and tells fox "i'm fine compared to tragically the truck drivers and th

reporter: melissa, we're in crozet. i will get out of the way to let you look for the first time.his is the crash here, you can see behind me, that white crumpled truck is the trash truck carrying three individuals. one fatality, one serious injured and one miraculously with minor injuries. the train was moving west, direction, orient you a little bit, melissa. the train is coming this way. where the truck was coming up, there are officers walking up. this is blind spot, steep hill. it is in their investigation, they believe the initially the truck encountered a blind spot some coming up, you can see the front of the train came to a rest quarter of a mile up there. of course minor injuries thankfully on that train. the president spoke about this incident a little earlier today. here is what he had to say. >> just want to start by saying i spoke with speaker ryan just a few moments ago, and, they're doing pretty good. the train accident was a tough one tremendous jolt. looks like driver of the truck was killed. and very sad to see that. but they're going on to the conference. repor

this is the scene of town called crozet virginia outside of charlotte, have a vast you can see the trash here was ripped off of its wheels when it tried to cross over the tracks and was hit by this amtrak train. now, the white house confirmed earlier today one fatality, one serious fatality. we are also told there were some minor injuries on board that train. now, here at this crossing there are warning signs warning truck drivers about a possible bottoming out situation if they're not careful trying to go over those tracks. the investigation is centering now on whether or not that truck became stuck on those tracks as that amtrak was coming down the line. now, several republican lawmakers who were with the us capitol police today on this train were tweeting out at the time of this accident. they say, it sounded like an explosion, full frontal collision with this truck. tonight the ntsb is on the scene along with amtrak investigators trying to figure out exactly what happened here. for now we're live in southwest have a, tom fitzgerald. we'll send it back in to you. >> thank you very muc

crozet, virginia, just outside by about 12 to 15 miles, charlottesville.wo amtrak crew members and two passengers were transported to a local hospital. we're told with minor injuries. but they were taken off that train. that is in addition to the three people that we know were severely injured inside the truck that the train hit. the truck that was on the tracks. one we know has perished. the other in -- more serious condition. the third condition of that third person, rather, the condition of we do not know at this point. and if we do know, maybe it's mixed up in some of these other numbers and we can't delineate that we can tell that you dr. mark, the mar, the congressman there who joined us one of those who jumped to the rescue and tried to save the life of the one man who perished who was on with us a short while ago. that was our first opportunity to hear what this would have looked like with hands on trying to save lives and what people in the windows could see because we have talked with enough members of congress and witnesses now who say that they
