well cruz in santa cruz county used jet skis this morning to rescue people stranded in their homes and felton grove neighborhoods began to flood in the san lorenzo river rose past flood stage. a lot of residents used sandbags ahead of the storm. some say that despite their efforts, water was still close to coming into their homes. sheriff's deputies are also going door to door to evacuate some homes and some people. well, they refused to leave. they did have to come in with the boats and rescue a couple of people. i heard there's one person down the road here who has their 90 year old mother living with them, and they brought in a sea do to get her out. um, and there were some people in the this apartment that these apartments over here evacuated and there was one man they went and got from there. so i know there were a couple there's our neighbors refused to leave their still there. the water has receded some of this new time, but authorities are still telling people to still stay away. the city of watson bill has issued evacuation orders. this map was tweeted out by the city. all of

santa cruz, north bay mountains 20 plus inches. on average two to three times the amount of rain we should see for the entire month of january. so way off the charts here for that. and that's where we're seeing the problems down here near gilroy, points to the south, because uvas reservoir is 108% of capacity, so uvas creek right now pushing that water on highway 101. the warning tonight, still be careful around any creeks, rivers or streams. they're running very high and fast all throughout the bay area even though we are currently under a break. thankfully so. they're getting heavy rainfall in central and southern california, but late last week it looked like the rain would be continuing all day long today. thing picked up from the north bay down to the south bay. now, again, we do have our next storm system by 11:00 tonight offshore. i think we'll get into heavier pockets by 2:00 a.m. that is extremely heavy downpour. maybe even some thunderstorms and some small hail with that. santa rosa, san francisco, redwood city down to san

santa cruz itself. we've been hearing reports of many small streams reaching flood stage starting to overflow their banks, low lying areas, poor drainage areas really starting to see flood waters piling up and reports of evacuations in effect. in fact, the entirety of santa cruz county is in a flash flood warning right now. is that saying something right there? san jose up to fremont. you're still in the midst of moderate even heavy rainfall dumba4ton bridge still looking at it too. see those areas of yellow from san jose milpitas on up to snow that some of our heaviest of rainfall across the region right now. so some of us are drying out, but some of us still have some heavy rain over the next couple of hours here by 10:00am this morning. most of the north bay are out of it. even much of the peninsula out of it to san jose south bay still dealing with that rain but starting to dry out after that point by noontime, we're drying out in just in time as this water begins to stack up afternoon hours. look,

and santa cruz hit hard. the storm shut down several major roads in santa cruz including a portion of highway. one as crews worked to remove a long jam of debris from the san lorenzo river. >> highway 90 and highway 17 have both been shut down as well because of landslides, clifford was on highway 17 today near those landslides. he has more. >> well, right now, i'm standing along highway 17 between los gatos and santa cruz right at the summit where t you take a look behind me here. all of the southbound lanes remain closed on monday afternoon following wet weather overnight. a mudslide blocked all of the southbound lanes near glenwood drive along highway 17. caltrans came in, blocked off the southbound lanes at summit and started working on clearing the roadway that resulted in a long line of people who had to turn around go searching for other ways to get around the blockage. i did talk to a couple people who decided to stay here and wait it out, although they didn't know how long they'd have to be here. it

santa cruz county , evacuation orders have been issued. this is a map showing the affected communities in red pic they include watsonville, sea cliff, socal, and the center close mounts. the areas in yellow are warnings for devin fehely joins us live with information on a rescue that happens tonight at a local ymca. what happened? is everybody okay? >> reporter: exactly. i would describe it more as an evacuation than a rescue. basically, here's what happened. i am in downtown boulder creek. there has been waves of rain coming through this area all day in afternoon into the evening. is expected to really sort of be the epicenter of the storm in the santa cruz mountains. and for some reason today, more than 200 school children from san jose and from albany were bused into this area to a ymca science camp. behind me is a volunteer fire department . the fire chief and other emergency officials in this area , they finally realized, this really is not a very good idea , to bring the school children here , 215 of them total from the san jose and

this is in between that big amusement park at the santa cruz beach boardwalk and the santa cruz wharf, these tree branches and debris or just sprinkled all throughout the beach here. volleyball nets, for the most part, are standing upright, but there's one far the distance here that's much closer to the water that took a direct hit from the waves crashing onto the shore. i want to show you a look at what the beach looked like during the storm waves are crashing up and beyond the pier and police around here are asking everyone to make sure you stay away from the beach is pretty much the coastline until the waters come down and we're not really sure how soon we can expect that to happen because there are more storms. more rain coming on the way this weekend, the beach boardwalk, the wharf, the pier. all of that remaining closed this morning. there are a number of roadways and highways are closed as well. those closures were like we remain in place for the unforeseeable future, especially if you're coming in from places like felton or ben loman. you're going to have some trouble getting

jesse thank you staying in santa cruz county.here is another community now dealing with major flooding and damage. the coastal town of capitola got a break in the weather this morning, but you can see here all the logs all the debris that have washed up on capitol, a beach during the series of storms that have battered the coast. people came down to the shore line, too. get a closer look for themselves. today hundreds of residents and businesses have been without power there for days, and a number of restaurants suffered major damage at zelda's windows were shattered. the interior was flooded, and they say they're just hoping to be able to reopen by spring break tonight more than 40,000 customers across the san francisco bay area do not have power. the majority of those customers are in the south beach tonight. we're more than 27,000 customers are without electricity on the peninsula more than 60. the 700 customers do not have power. that number is 3500 in the north bay, 1900 in the east bay and fewer than 1000 customers without

it sounds like cruz moved in quickly. yeah it's been a busy 24 hours here in san francisco, as you can possibly imagine. we're at the intersection of slowed and unit pro sarah. this intersection was closed from about nine o'clock last night until after noon today, while crews had to try to clear a downed tree that impacted munich service. if you take a look over here behind me, you might be able to see that there is still one closed lane. that's one of the south bend lanes on unit pro sarah and this again all this work because of a downed tree in the area. a day and a half of rain on top of a wet weekend turned some of the streets of san francisco into rivers and finally proved to be too much for a cypress tree on slowed. the tree came down wednesday evening, blocking the intersection and dragging down 500 ft. of money lines. community trains, the roadway is closed. we had to bring ukraine in last night to start to move the tree, and then we took another tree out as well. just for safety considerations. so our crews are s

cruz and monitoring the levels of san jose guadalupe river. caltrain posted this video and just few hours ago california tracks one adjacent to that river and downtown san jose. the video was taken under highway 87 caltrain says so far today it has not experienced any issues. a search for a five year old boy who was swept away in flood waters on the central coast has been called off. the boy and his mother were stranded in a vehicle and pasta robles bystanders pull the mother out of the vehicle, but the boy was swept downstream, according to officials after roughly seven hours search, only the boys shoe was found. officials stop the searches. water levels were deemed too dangerous for drivers. san luis obispo county sheriff's office says the boy has not been declared dead. state officials, meantime, say the death toll is up to 14 people. from the latest string of storms. people in san jose's willow glen neighborhood made up most of the bay area's power outages. ktvu is james torres shows us some of the damage left behind in the south bank. at

we mentioned flooding in felton in santa cruz county.ghborhoods overtaken by the san lorenzo river. the water sent people rushing to safety. county rescue teams hopped on boats and jet skis. they literally went door to door making sure everyone got out. nbc's robert handa is there. >> reporter: well, you can pretty much pick any spot in felton grove, and you're going to see flooding or damages from flooding. we're here in the backyard of someone who's already evacuated. you can kind of see what their backyard looks like. a lot of damage. that's why they had to leave. you can see in their backyard, that's the san lorenzo river. it might not seem as though it's that high up, but don't forget this is overwhelming the dock and backyard that used to be here. now, if you look down, you can see this mud is just really hard to walk through and really hard to make repairs. it's going to be a long time for people here in felton grove to recover, but they are used to it here. they say not only will they be making repairs, they don't have any intent

richmond, san carlos and the santa cruz mountains. as we head into sunday morning, bands of showers passing through. nothing expected to be as intense as earlier today. sunday around midday we start to catch a little bit of a break. a few showers. once we pass lunchtime, rain will pick up into evening. future cast into sunday evening, rain comes back in. peak event for the storm is midnight right on top of the monday morning commute and a little bit of snow. east of san jose around mount hamilton, colder air, could be snow. peak rain totals sunday into monday. santa cruz mountains and south bay may get the most rain of the storm. it moves out finally tuesday. after that, one more weather system dropping through but look at the rain estimates with this wednesday storm. maybe not even a storm, colder air with it, doesn't have the atmospheric river going, so rain totals will be more tame for the middle part of the week. after that, something we haven't seen since mid december, more than one dry day in a row. which takes us to playoff wee
