now winter storm warnings taking effect today at 04:00pm for the santa cruz mountains. the blows the east bay hills as well as the north bay mountains. multiple inches of snowfall are expected in these areas as we move through the overnight hours and a chance of some flurries, even if they don't stick lower in elevation as low as 500 feet in elevation for some spots. now, freezing temperatures were still in the midst of frost advisories and freeze warnings through 09:00am this morning. temperatures falling as cold as the upper 20's snowfall totals as we work our way into the evening tonight, you can see those deeper shades of blue down there around mount hamilton. that's well over a foot if not closer to 2 feet of snowfall piling up overnight, santa cruz mountains as well as the north bay mountains, east bay hills. and even a chance of some flurries right there around twin peaks about davidson in san francisco itself. now as far as future casco spotty showers will continue through the day today. really picking up activity into the evening tonight, though, this is 07:00p

this is that santa cruz old santa cruz highway just up the road and you can see so much snow. we do know that late last big rig, jackknifed, downed trees, many cars that when they were here at my location, thought everything was ok, then they drove up. and that's when they realize they slammed into a brick wall, so to speak. and there are still many cars just stranded up there. in fact, we spoke to a man at 5.30. he drove up there. he got stuck. he had to get a ride back down. he was up there in his pickup truck when he could not go any further. thankfully, he stopped where he did. listen. it. maybe 20 feet in front of my truck. okay. so obviously it's cold rain here. just a few quickly changes to snow. once we started elevating, you just heard quickly from rain to hail to just snow. you want to believe out fast. this happened. so your truck is still stuck up there. yes, i'm still stuck. i could not get out to try to pull it out. luckily, i had someone come rescue me. ok? so when he said just 20 feet in front of him, he was talking about trees crashing down right in front of h

this all happened tuesday in santa cruz county. firefighters say that tree fell into the family living room pending that child. and ernie kron four's gayle ong reports from boulder creek. >> tuesday night, this redwood tree came crashing down into this boulder creek home in the santa cruz mountains, critically hurting a one year-old child. you know, i was in shock because i'm like the poor little guy. this woman lives down the road from the family. she says a neighbor told her what happened. firefighters responded to the home on bobcat lane around 06:25pm. for a report of a person trapped under a tree that went into a home. it was terrible. i've never seen the winds that heart. >> it was i mean, you can hear it when it's when the trees are going. you can. you know, you can can just hear it. >> this neighbor says the area was hit hard during the czu lightning fire in 2020. she does not know the family but seeing the aftermath reminded her of when a tree damage her home in the 1980's, the tree from a neighbor came over here. and let

right now in the santa cruz mountains, we are seeing snow fall.the last 30 minutes or so, it let up a bit. last hour we saw pretty large chunks of snow, enough to stick to your jacket, this microphone. right now we are seeing the conditions let up ever so slightly. as i am sure you can see the snow is still coming down. let's look at the some of the scenes we saw overnight. snow fall in los gatos again just off of highway 17, enough to put snow plow crews to work. on 17, we are still seeing the crews. but there is not quite enough snow for them to collect too much. just before midnight at the lick observatory 20 miles east of where we are also saw significant snow fall. in the santa cruz mountains, there are damp, wet, very chilly conditions. we are seeing more people on highway 17 making their morning commute. we are seeing police crews out aiding people to get to where they need to be. if you don't have to leave, i would recommend going outside and taking a look at the snow fall that we are seeing and maybe even making yourself a snowball. >> we

a look at the scene here in the santa cruz mountains. snow is not just dusting trees but dropping branches, taking out powerlines and shutting down roads. most lanes of highway 17, only just reopened about an hour ago part of the county sent an alert telling everyone to cancel all plans unless it is an emergency because it is too risky. in marin, beautiful site. this was tooth out from the sheriff's office with a warning, that ridgecrest will of art is closer for snowy conditions out there as well. let us take another look at what our chopper got this afternoon. it was just so beautiful. this shows the snow over mission peak plus mount hamilton and the diablo range. our chief meteorologist is here. what is the weekend looking like? >> we are not going to be able to shake the storm system just yet. the same one that brought us all of that low snow earlier this morning will stick around a little bit longer and then we will have an additional system by sunday. even more in the next week. we will have all the details in that seven-day foreca

that is , the santa cruz mountains will be more widely spread from santa cruz all the way north and to marin county and south down towards big, sir. here's the current radar and you can see not a lot. this is sort of the absence of moisture. this is a cold cold system. basically it was almost a dry cold front when it came in, but all this cold air is filled in behind it. and now tonight in the next three hours is going to link up with some moisture, some basically some tropical moisture and that's going to fire off the precipitation. so far we've had pretty light showers we could see up to some areas, maybe an inch of rain, but more like a quarter inch or happens, but they're really the real story here is that winter storm warning that is, in effect for basically the mountains of the bay area above 1000 ft that that doesn't happen very often. that is very, very rare. and this is the model, so i just wanna give you a quick idea. then i'll move on and we'll go ahead and the regular segment, but here is right now this is the computer model. see, it started double up there right there. tha

clara valley but there is snow in the santa cruz mountains and also around mt. hamilton but this will be the case through the rest of the night. snowfall levels right now are still around 2000 feet, those will steadily drop as we head into the night and early friday morning. more moisture just off the coast, that will be moving onshore within the next 45 minutes or so and there is more over the pacific will come at us in waves through the enter the early fr morncommute,e extra time on the roads, extra stopping distance. mostly wet roads across the bay area but there will be snow accumulations above 1500 feet. now, below 1500 feet, you might need snowflakes, it won't be measurable but that is in the level where we have problems on highway 17 and highway 9 in the santa cruz mountains. northbay mountains will pick up decent snowfall amounts. the amount will specifically vary wildly depending on your specific elevation, and, there is a wind advisory in effect for much of the bay area. it goes through 4:00, tomorrow. the wind is strong right now and they will be stro

let's go down towards the santa cruz mountains. as we head towards the san mateo county area, both of -- boulder creek reporting some snow, the snow has fallen as low as 500 feet. we looked right around la honda, it is rain but switching over across i-35 to snow. palo alto reporting some snow believe it or not, and this is really continuing even up to the north as we look towards about st. helena radar sites, the hills around calistoga getting snow and we are looking at point arena to hopwood area, in between where the hills are, there. we see some snow showers right around fischbach road. so don't be surprised if you do encounter some snow down in the valley floor. it is a lot. a light storm on our scale through the evening, which becomes a two, immoderate strength storm as we head into night. hour-by-hour, 830 tonight, the intensity of the rainfall picks up. the snowfall and the coverage will increase as well. going into early tomorrow morning you see a thunder -- photos from her too, not at the question. a winter advisory up for

it's just kind of a shock to see snow on grapevines in california. >> also highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains was a mess today. snow downed trees and fallen wires shut it down most of the day. it is back open over the summit tonight and our len ramirez was there. >> reporter: well, a significant at of snow fell up here in the santa cruz mountains overnight. one chp officer estimated it to be about four inches right here at the summit. unfortunately that led to a lot of problems, but now the roadway is clear and most of the traffic problems are over. the traffic is moving again on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains and families are coming up to play, but the day began with traffic coming to a standstill. dozens of trees fell across the highway making it impassable. this big rig was one of several vehicles that got stuck trying to make it over the summit. it ended up blocking the lanes. >> there's still vehicles who even at low speeds, we're talking less than 20 miles per hour, are losing control of their vehicles into little hillsides and embankments. >> we have several backroads

one of the places we are concerned is in the santa cruz mountains. these communities are not expecting serial levels of snow, but the highest amounts will be in the highest elevations between these communities. travel will be tricky on highway 9, 17 and $.35 it runs along the crest of the santa cruz mountains. one of the other spots that we are monitoring is going to be near the caldecott tunnel, where potentially the snow line will drop down to about that level. that is about the lowest that it gets tomorrow morning, and we are not going to be seeing the same amount of snow that we are gog to see in the santa cruz mountains and santa clara hills or the north bay mountains, but that is a heavily-trafficked area. allow some extra time if you are making your way through there. we are talking about amounts on grassy areas and rooftops adding up to about an inch on the highest elevations of the berkeley and oakland hills, and a little bit more as you head into the north part of the east bay. on the roads themselves, it will mostly just be wet as we go to

this is right on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. it is an unincorporated community that is part of santa clara county. this is the post office. you have the small-market here. you can see how wet the ground is here. that is because around 5:00 and 5: 15 tonight we started seeing snowflakes falling. it was just small flurries, but it was enough to get people here excited about the snow. this is at about 1600 feet in elevation. people were coming out of some of the businesses here and looking at the snow, taking pictures and videos, trying to catch some of the snowflakes in their hands. a lot of the people we talked to here so they are used to these strong winter storms, but what they are not used to is the snow. at the one small grocery store in redwood estates, the owner says they have seen a steady stream of people coming in to get ready to hunker down. >> people know to stock up around here. they will get ice, and if they don't have it, a generator. a lot of comfort foods and frozen foods. and beer. of course. >> reporter: store e

it's so hit or miss what we are seeing in the santa cruz mountains.past saratoga, you are already starting to see snow coming down this morning. as we move over towards the tri-valley, we have seen a couple spotty showers here and there, and it's cleared up for now. we have seen it moving through with parts of the east bay and snow flurries in the mix as the cold air continues this morning. a lot of the heavier rain and a lot of the deeper moisture has been off the coast. we are under a winter storm warning for all of these areas shaded in pink, and that includes parts of the tri-valley, the eastbound hills and around mount diablo. we have the coastal range and marin county as well. for parts of sonoma, we are looking at higher snowfall totals there. there's the possibility in some of these spots we can see enough to accumulate there in the next knew days. mount hamilton, that's 12 inches of snowfall. we could see decent amounts of snow in parts of the north bay as well. it does start out spotty, but we see the activity picking up later in the afterno
