how about csx?ok at the headline numbers you might think this quarter wasn't much different. csx had excellent 21% revenue growth slightly shrinking volumes, 24%. they had some efficiency issues. there were two major differences. csx took a bigger hit in terms of its efficiency ratio. cost divided by revenue. the most important metric in the railroad business. more important, management was vague. union pacific gave you specific numbers for 2022, they were quite bullish. csx was a lot more cagey more qualitative language. fewer numbers. that was the criticism of general electric today which got hurt csx didn't give you something you could hang your hat on which is why the stock got hammered on friday down 3.2% you needed something firm. why was union pacific able to give us a clearer forecast a lot of it comes down to geography. they are a west coast railroad csx is an east coast railroad. forcing them to reroute the trains, an epidemic of train robberies. but for all the headaches trans-pacific tra

we have been looking at csx, petroleum, cisco, old-school names that have low dividends and multiple,year growth on cisco on csx and 14% on marathon petroleum. regardless of the narrative for the markets, up single digits or down single digits at the end of the year, dividends will play a huge part of the total return for investors. so we are circling the wagons and going back to old-fashion valuation. maria: so even though rates will be higher because the fed is expected to raise multiple times, you want to look at the dividend payers to get an even rate? >> yeah, absolutely. whether there's 3 interest rate hikes or 4 interest rate hikes or 5 interest rate hikes, if they are quarter point hikes, we are still talking about relatively low interest environment. companies can make more money because it's still not high. inflation is the issue. that's what we have to be scared of. correction is a normal course of action. they never feel good when we are in the middle of them but i don't think we will see a massive bear market this year. there's still too much of way of corporate earnings
