zoo staff saw for the first time, a fleeting glimpse of the cub, mei xiang cradling the cub in her arms. they say she's doing a terrific job. this birth came as a surprise. they thought perhaps there was a pseudopregnancy, a false pregnancy. mei xiang has had five of those in recent years. a sonogram that was given a couple of weeks ago, an ultrasound, showed nothing. it did not show a fetus inside of her. they thought this indeed may be one of those fake pregnancies. they gave her a 10% chance of actually giving birth this time around. imagine their surprise at 10:46 this morning when suddenly they heard the sounds, little whimpers, of a baby cub. so a lot of excitement here. they've been keeping a very close eye on her. everything, they say, looks terrific. right now mei xiang and her cub are just cuddled up inside the nest that she's created inside the panda house. >> she gets bamboo. she drags it into her den, and she shreds it up into smaller pieces and makes this big giant nest to cushion the cub and keep her safe and warm in there. >> reporter: now, giant pandas are not necessari

do you see the cub?e've been glued to the panda cam for several hours trying to get our first look at the cub l sw. that cub is now just eight hours old. proud mama mei xiang gave birth just before 11:00 last night. megan mcgrath joins us live with more on the exciting arrival. hi, megan. >> reporter: good morning, eun. it certainly is an exciting arrival. you can imagine how the folks here are feeling this morning. this is quite a surprise. they only gave mei xiang a 10% or less chance of actually being pregnant. she's had five pseudopregnancies. there was thought this was perhaps another false alarm. just a little before 11:00 last night, 10:46 to be precise, they found out, no, this time it was for real. they heard the sounds of a little cub in there. so we have a birth here at the national zoo. i'm joined by don moore, the head of the national care sciences. talk a little about that moment. must have been amazing for you all. >> we're ecstatic. she showed a little bit of a jerk while she was sitting

the cub was just a week old. news 4's megan mcgrath joins us live from the zoo with more on what we might learn today. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you would imagine, just an extremely sad day here at the national zoo. everything seemed to be going so well, and then on sunday things went terribly wrong. the cub died. we're expecting to learn more information about what exactly may have happened here. an animal autopsy was performed, and we're being told at 10:00 this morning they're going to release the preliminary results of that report. we are expecting to learn more perhaps about what happened here. mei xiang by all accounts was doing a terrific job as a mother. then on sunday, 9:00 a.m., that is the last time that zoo officials heard any kind of noise from the baby cub here. a short time later, 9:17, that's when mei xiang let out a distress call, and zoo officials realized that something was terribly wrong. the zoo staff was able to get in there about an hour later, and they took a look

we may learn more about exactly what killed this cub. mei xiang was seeming to do a very good job as a mother. everything seemed to be on track. the cub was making noises, seemed to be healthy. then on sunday, something went horribly wrong. at 9:00 a.m., that's the last noise the zoo staff heard from the baby. at 9:17 mei xiang put out a distress call, a honking noise which was unusual for her. that alerted zoo staff was something was wrong. they sprang into action. by the time they got to the cub, however, it was not breathing. they tried cpr and other things to revive the cub, but they just could not bring it back. as you would imagine, the staff here very, very upset about the death. >> the keepkeepers, the veterinarians, the volunteers we watching this cub with great joy and with great passion. the loss -- there's no other word for it. it's just devastating for us at this time. >> reporter: zoo staff say there were no obvious signs of trauma, no obvious signs of infection. again, they hope to learn more with preliminary results from
