the cubs were born on saturday. the panda care team has been here when bao bao had a twin that was still born. despite their great efforts, they couldn't save the cub. >> you have the awesome responsibility of helping a mother panda care for those cubs, i mean it's such an honor and at the same time the superhuman efforts that that staff made to keep this cub alive, i mean the entire panda house was filled with the best medical, the best animal care team in the world. >> reporter: we do know that there is a very low success rate when it comes to panda cub twins being born in the wild and that is why that they used the swapping out method one cub at a time. that is the technique that the chinese use to hopefully have both cubs survive, but in this instance unfortunately that did not happen. a necropsy will be underway to determine exactly why and how this little cub died. at the national zoo surae chinn, wusa9. >> we were just pulling for both of them, but sadly it was not to be. surae, thank you. >>> it was another

zoo offing officials tell us t weren't able to switch the cubs out from their mother from 11 p.m.t night to 7:05 this morning, which means one of the cub also to receive the supplemental formula instead of being news nursed by mei xiang. no reason to be concerned. had it hasn't tempered the excitement here. people have been coming and going all day long. veterinarians say take a listen and what they are about to hear is one of the reasons they know the cubs are doing fine. both cubs have been very vocal and and appeared active and healthy since they were born on saturday. zoo officials say they can't stress enough just how critical this first week is for the cubs' survival. cecil had 12 young cubs and more offspring than that. were a lot of worries that another lion would come in and kill them. yet another bad news story out of this story, which has lale touched a nerve globally, this killing of cecil the lion. but oxford university professors telling us that, in fact, jericho, cecil's brother, is protecting those lion cubs for the moment. so, yes, a bit of good news tonight. >> is that common? that a brother, a lion brother would do this? >> well, it is common, because, you know, this is a large pride of lions and it's all about bloodlines, genetically. if an animal feels that it might have some of sitz genetic code, as strp, in those young cubs, it will protect them. and look, i'll put this delicately. jericho might have been the father of some of those cubs as well, so he's kind of hedging his bets there, when it comes to protecting the overall pride. so, yeah, anderson, it's quite normal, but there's still a threat from other lions. and the bigger picture is here that lion populations have been decimate

one of the cubs died just days later, but the surviving cub is doing well. zoo officials say mei xiang is a good mother, fiercely attending to the cub. she left his side briefly the first time today and the cub is thriving, making lots of noise. >> it is gaining weight, which is a good thing, so we know that it's nursing successfully and it's growing and again, it's just listening to that voice. >> reporter: good news following the death of the twin earlier this week. initial findings of a necropsy, an animal autopsy, indicate that the cub died as a result of food material getting into the lungs. >> it is a foreign material. our intestinal tract is set up to handle breaking that down. our lungs are only meant to take in air. >> reporter: panda that died was also a boy and also the offspring of tian tian. that cub was bottle and tube fed and that's likely how the food got into his lungs. zoo officials say they have no regrets. they had to intervene because mei xiang was not feeding the cub proper labor day he was going to die anyway. megan mcgrath, news4. >>

a panda giving birth to two panda cubs this weekend. the national zoo was already marking another celebration. diane joins us live with the celebration tonight. >> so far we are told that the giant panda cubs are doing well here at the zoo. this is only the third time that hasant panda in the u.s. given birth to a set of twins. it was all caught on camera here. even though the giant panda cubs were not on display at the national zoo, there was no shortage of excitement as they celebrated her second earth day with a fresh and frozen fruit cake. many came to the zoo the day after she gave birth to twins just to be a part of it all. video of the firstborn giant panda cub during its first exam. the court -- the cover treat this morning was the firstborn. one was kept warm in an incubator in the hopes of increasing survival. the frequency hinges on whether the mother allows it. >> the goal is for each of these cubs to spend precious time with their mom. >> i was like -- come on, we're leaving. let's go. the newest about additions, she convin

tian tian is now the father of three healthy panda cubs, tai shan, bao bao and the newest cub. >> oh. i didn't know that. >> reporter: that's not all. >> so we just learned the new panda is a boy. >> i'm a boy like the panda. >> reporter: the small boy cub makes big noises. for the panda team it's music to their ears. >> every time you hear that cub squealing you hear those big healthy lungs on it and it's telling mei xiang that it's hungry, that it wants to nurse and best of all, what we see is when the cub squeals, mei pay attention. >> reporter: the cub that didn't -- pays attention. >> reporter: the cub that didn't survive was a fraternal twin, also a boy. after a necropsy doctors discovered food in the lungs and preliminary test results suggest it died of aspiration pneumonia. that means the cub most likely choked on some food while being bottle or tube fed and the lungs got infected. the national zoo and its fans are focused on the living cub and the rest of his healthy family. >> i wished him a happy father's day i mean really. he has to be very proud. look at his abs. he's got

the smaller of the two cubs born on saturday died this afternoon.t's get the latest from jackie bensen, who was live at the zoo. >> reporter: wendy, there was just a press conference here a short time ago. this is obviously devastating news for the folks here at the national zoo. now, they tell us that the little cub died shortly after 2:00 this afternoon. they say the panda team had been rotating both of those little cubs in the past 24 hours, allowing each to benefit from spending time with their mother, mei xiang and they say the smaller cub was with7e8 mei xi from about 2 p.m. yesterday until this morning and when they swapped out the cubs, they noticed that the little one didn't appear to be doing well that it had not increased in weight overnight and exhibited possible respiratory issues. here's what the zoo's chief vet had to same >> she was showing no preference for either cub, in fact, trying to do her best with both, having challenge and manipulating them. we had some concerns that the cub may be injured or both maybe injure and per our p
