david culver's mother and grandmother were born on the island. they left in 1961 after the revolution. recently david took a journey with his family back to cuba. he's here now with a look at a special report coming up on this saturday. david? >> vance it was my mom and grandmother's first time back in 54 years. now, for so long they, like many other cuban-americans didn't want to go back, but something changed this past year for my grandmother. she told me she wanted to go. we spent six days on the island visiting havana the capital and another city where we were united with neal. that gave us a raw look at how simply many cubans live. extended family get a hug and a kiss. she eagerly wanted to show us around her humble home, opening up the glassless window blinds to let some natural light in, we hoped a little breeze. the heat and humidity unbearable at times. we headed into her kitchen. look, this is all the water that she collects. only running water twice a week so she saves up. her propane tank indoors, sitting next to the stove it fuels. h

new at 6, david culver will be in court for jesse matthew's trial. he's here now.hat can we expect? >> a pretrial hearing is any indication, this could be an emotional, passionate trial. one filled with riveting testimony. arguments also between some of the counsel, prosecution april the defense. yesterday the judge gave permission for the woman who accused matthew of sexual assault to identify him in front of a jury. this was a big setback for the defense who keeps telling the judge they need more time to prepare for this case. but monday's trial date has been set for months. now, the alleged victim already flew in thursday from india. she was not there for the start of yesterday's hearing. prosecutors told the judge she was too tired to testify yesterday. but the judge ordered she be woken up from her nap in a hotel room and be brought to court. on the stand, the victim told the judge she was attacked while walking home from a grocery store in fairfax. that happened back in 2005. >> and that trial starts next week. >> that's right on monday. >> and we know that t

. >> thank you for joining us i'm david culver. >> we are seeing rain across the region.ks like things are going to get wet. >> amelia segal is in for chuck bell. amelia, you are thinking the potential for severe weather later today? >> severe weather potential. overall, we are going to pick up one to three inches of rain. you can see the rain on storm team 4 radar. as we work into the afternoon and evening hours, heavier rain becomes more likely. with that, the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms as well. cold front is going to push through later today and that's going to be the main trigger for that potential of severe weather. here are the weather headlines. during the morning hours showers and rain from 2:00 to 11:00 p.m. heavy rain and thunderstorms. during the evening hours a line of thunderstorms develops. if the line develops it would be from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. that's where we could get the most severe weather from the severe weather being gusty wind and potential for a tornado or two. here is future weather at 5:00 p.m. you can see the line i'

david culver is live with more on the emotional fallout from this up expected move. >> reporter: chris this was a shock to most of us in the courtroom. here we were waiting for the defense to present its side of the case, jesse matthew's side. all of a sudden shall the shall, the trial was over,eing arguments. >> some do it when they don't want to admit what they did. >> reporter: the unexpected decision before the defense team could argue his side of the case. matthew agreed to an alford plea. >> allows the defendant to admit the evidence against him is overwhelming and he can plead guilty without admitting get. >> reporter: he is convicted in the 2005 sex assault that happened in fairfax. monday, the victim testified her attacker grabbed her, dragged her into a wooded area, beat her and sexually assaulted her and tried to choke her to death. a forensics expert told jurors today that dna found under the victim's finger nail matched matthew's. seeking a substantial pen ten shari seine tension given the nature of the crimes. >> reporter: matthew walked out of court waving to his family.

news4's david culver is outside the courthouse in fairfax with more. david? >> reporter: the alleged victim told the court today that for anyone years, she kept the graphic details of this attack to herself, not even divulging it to her own family. in front of the courtroom, she said she fought and fought but her attacker overpowered her, brutally beating her and then sexually assaulting her with his happened. in opening statements, the prosecutor telling jurors the alleged victim was brutally beaten, punched and nearly strangled to death. she fought like the dick , he said, she fought like cracrazy. the attacker choked and choked until she lost consciousness. matthew has been charged in the 2005 incident. prosecutors say he attacked the woman in the city of fairfax, allegedly sexually assaulting her there, not far from a middle school and giant grocery store. he has been accused of trying to kill the woman as well. it wasn't until hannah graham's abduction and death in charlottesville did matthew emerge as a suspect in this fairfax case. investigators say dn

northern virginia bureau reporter david culver was in the courtroom for the high-profile trial and joins us with new information. david? >> reporter: jim as we stepped out here, bureau chief julie carey stayed inside the courtroom. that testimony just wrapping up from the victim. she was on the stand for about an hour. at times she struggled describing that attack from ten years ago. she is normally a very stoic and quiet person and teared up as she described in telling the court her attacker sat on her legs and banged her head on the ground. that's when she said he sexually assault herd with his hand. inside the fairfax county courthouse no cameras allowed but in the jury box now sits 14 residents of the county. two of them, alternates. they will be the ones to determine jesse matthews' fate. matthews charged in a 2005 sexual assault. prosecutors say he attacked a woman in the city of fairfax allegedly assaulting her here not far from a middle school and giant grocery store. he is aaccused of trying to kill the woman, too. it wasn't until hannah graham's abduction and death in charlotte

northern virginia reporter david culver just got out of the courtroom and joins us live in charlottesville with an update. what's this all about, david? >> reporter: pat, this is a pivotal pretrial hearing in the hannah graham murder investigation and this capital murder case. behind me you will notice a lot of attention, several media figures standing outside the courtroom here in albermarle county. on the bench is judge cheryl higgin higgins, she denied the jesse matthew's team request to recuse herself there is a stipulation to this saying judge higgins signed off on 25 of some 54 search warrants executeded in this case against jesse matthew. those generated a lot of the evidence here. sometimes there are motions filed during these trials to suppress those warrants, essentially keep them from being used in court. the judge argued she felt she could rule on the warrants without any bias but has a compromise with the defense team, she called in another judge to rule on those specific motions, that is, she will call that other judge in when those motions come to the court's attention. she,
