let's go back to david culver on scene. this is the 8111, gate house road in fairfax county. david? >> reporter: you know, i was just talking to the chief again trying to get a better understanding of the process when it comes to going through the building in question, initially the reports came in for the active shooter. i said why can't you get closer, he reminded me this is still an active scene. even though he took off his kevlar vest and relaxed somewhat, closer in they're still doing a sweep of the building. the parents are reunited with their children, getting the daycare cleared. that was a big concern here. take a look at the congestion all of this is causing. i want you to understand all the response we're looking at here. most of these a many of them undercover police cars, unmarked police cars. i executscouted about a dozen ambulances here, you have to know where we are positioned obviously within a two-minute drive of nova fairfax hospital on the other side here. they are looking at the potential for mass casualties, as of now they have one confirmed, believing it to be

. >> news 4 david culver took a drive to nape tolz see for himself. >> reporter: we wanted to give you a feel for what it's like driving on the road down here. legality let me show you some of the conditions. you're dodging fallen debris to this. power lines just dangling over the street. this is why it wouldn't be safe to drive at night down here. this is becoming a sight that is all too common down here, long lines for gas. i was just talking to one woman who has been in the car 45 minutes. she's only halfway there, another 45 to go. look at this line. it wraps about 50 cars all the way around here through the shopping center, outside of the shopping center, back onto the street. why the desperation? well, this is just one of a few gas stations that's actually working. from gas stations look like this, destroyed. this is along 41 from marco island up towards naples. we're just outside the city of naples. this place, my goodness, it took quite a hit from irma. now, when we were at that other gas station with the long lines, we noticed folks crying, we noticed folks angry, frustrated.

i'm david culver. we'll send it back to you. >> let's see how i amma could impact our forecast now with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> this is storm is just a huge massive beast. how long before it really starts to fizzle out? >> it's still going to be a day or two before we really start to see it wind down. but the hurricane it was yesterday, the tropical storm that was today has now become the tropical depression that is tonight. we're looking at the shower activity right now and really just the rain. and it has been heavy rain around the atlanta area parkts of alabama, trees down in both states. over a million people without power in georgia today, in parts of the carolinas extremely heavy rainfall. and all of the flooding, historic flooding in jacksonville, fan nav, brunswick, over toward the charleston area and they continue to get those outer rain bands making its way in here. the center right about here. making its way across the border into alabama overnight tonight. now, we also have to

we have two live reporters following irma's path in culver. we want to start with a closer look at irma's shift. a new track has come out as of 5:00, samara, is there any further shift in that or what are you seeing now with this? >> reporter: no major changes. however, i will say it's just shifted a few to the west meaning this could be more of a direct hit for areas like tampa and st. petersburg. show you where the storm is located. folks, the eyewall of this system where you see the most catastrophic winds is less than a mile from florida keys. can you see just how large irma is and you can see the extent the rain bands have impacted not only southern florida but central florida. it's not just heavy rain in those rain bands but we're talking tropical storm force winds southern florida will be experiencing. let's get a look at the track. here is a look at the track. category 3 is expected to strengthen over thet as it continues to push up, it's expected to be a category 4 hurricane at landfall. now how it sweeps up the coast impacting tampa

news 4's david culver is in the ft. lauderdale area. she's in a first hurricane. >> of course, in maryland we have the snow. i've lived there more than 20 years. so i'm accustomed to that. but here, yesterday i went to costco and i stood in line for two hours to get water. >> batteries are also in high demand. david says most stores have empty shelves at this point. gas, like gold these days. many stations are already out. >> if people aren't hunkering down, they're getting out of town. a lot of them are coming to our area. megan mcgrath is live at reagan national to continue our team coverage now of how this is impacting our local airports. megan, good morning. >> well, good morning, guys. we are seeing flights that are arriving here at reagan national airport from the miami area. there's one delayed a couple of hires but due flights leaving from our area too. we have three miami flights, two are listed, believe it or not, on time. including one at 6:00 a.m. the one in the middle, that however, is canceled. they're both strobing here.

first let's go down to david culver. he's been down there in the miami/fort lauderdale area. you rode this out. fortunately you were off the beaches. what are you seeing in assessing the damage? >> reporter: doug, the beach has moved 500 feet from the actual beach into places like this. this parking lot here in fort lauderdale, just along a-1-a. much of it covered, they've had to clean it as though you would clean snow up in northern virginia or the d.c. area. of course, down here with the sun out, certainly feeling like a beautiful evening but it's been a day of work being for a lot of these people, cleaning up and in some cases rebuilding. >>> if you vacationed in or visited fort lauderdale beach, this may be a strange sight for you. this is a-1-a the main ocean drive. looks like a giant sandbox. >> this would have been perhaps confused for part of the beach this m a lot of people thought it did because they had driven on it and got stuck. >> reporter: stuck on the sand and on the grass, downed trees blocking roads, creating a jungle over pavement in broward county. and dow

. >> david culver is live with new details on this developing story. david. >> reporter: wendy and jim, brand-new details. bh we were on air an hour ago, we had a bunch of questions we have answers to. let me walk you through what police are telling us in the past ten minutes or so. they say as you mentioned this started as a hostage situation. they say the house back there, you can see where police are kind of huddled in front of it, they got a call from someone in that home saying that a family member had a bomb strapped around him and was threatening them. so, they responded around 10:25 this morning. when they pulled up, police say that is when a 15-year-old came towards them with a crow bar. they say he was walking towards them and what they describe as a threatening manner. we can bring you a little closer with video we gathered a short time ago as you see the wide response of police officers here in prince william county to this neighborhood. when he came towards them with that crow bar, police say officer fired several shots. one of them hit an
