abc's chris cuomo has the details. >> reporter: the troops were riding in a chinook helicopter brought in to support a firefight with the taliban. as it approached it drew small arms fire, a rocket-propelled grenade hit the chinook causing it to explode and crash killing all aboard. we're told the military led by special operations forces began an immediate manhunt combing the surrounding areas for leads. taliban fighters were identified including a man who fired the rpg that downed the chinook. the suspects were believed to be trying to flee the area but special forces picked up their trail following them for 12 hours to a compound in a remote wooded area. after insuring that was clear of civilians f-16s fired and killed the taliban including the man who fired the rpg. >> our thanks to yis cuomo for that report. the men left 14 widows and 24 children. >>> england is waking up since its first night of calm. thousands of extra police officers patrolled the streets. courts worked through the night to process more than a thousand arrested for rioting and looting and prime minister cameron

new york governor andrew cuomo toured some of the devastation in prattsville in the catskill mountains we believe at the end of the day the total damage will be close to $1 billion. over 600 homes destroyed. six towns inundated. 150 major highways have been damaged. 22 state bridges closed. in the area of agriculture, over $45 million in damage. 140,000 acres and still climbing. >> brown: in northern new jersey, new evacuations took place overnight in paterson-- the state's third-largest city-- as the passaic river crested. elsewhere, people like bonnie riddick of lodi, new jersey returned to their homes to find a daunting clean-up ahead of them. >> this is my second flood in five years. i'm getting the hell out of here. so, my whole apartment i can't get back in for like a month, two months, until we gut all the walls, do all the electrical work again. so annoying. >> brown: power outages and flooding also meant that summer vacation will last a few days longer for schools across new england. a number of districts delayed the start of the new school year, which had been set for this we

want to tell you that the locals here were surprised when governor andrew cuomo stopped by here to survey damage on long island. this is one of the places he came. he went up on the boardwalk here. he took a look around, he looked at a life guard station that had been upended. he shook a lot of hands. then we were able to talk to him one-on-one and ask him some questions about how he thinks new york fared. now, he said that he does not think that new york overprepared for this monster storm. and he said that he does think that new yorkers and others here in the state will pay very strict attention for the next storm that comes around, that they will listen to officials and not think they are simply crying wolf. here's what the governor told me. >> don't underestimate the damage that has been done here. this will go on for days, literally. so i think it was prudent what we did, it would have been worse if we hadn't. >> reporter: now, back to you live here. the governor said throughout the state about a million people have had called the flooding in some parts of the state horrendous, not h

andrew cuomo talked to me about the catskill area because of the flooding.et's go to long beach where susan candiotti is standing by. tell me what you're seeing. >> reporter: two predictions came true. there is flooding. and there are power outages. that much is true. if you happen to be in one of those areas, you're not feeling too good about things right now. if not, officials are saying from their early estimates, no injuries, no damages. there is flooding in some minor areas that they always get flooding. a lot of the water has already receded. no serious reports of heavy damage. however, 450,000 customers on long island are without power. we're reporting to you from long beach. this is where we were staying. you can see they flooded in the first floor of this hotel. if you look down the street, you can see that they're pumping water out. you can see that water gushing out of that hose right down there to the left of the police vehicle. then as we drove around town, we saw some issues, minor flooding. but honestly, it wasn't bad at all. walking over here
