yet there was another accident in cupertino just recently. >> there was. the pg&e story just continues. it doesn't seem to slow down. this afternoon, actually only about an hour ago, was the one-year anniversary and memorial service in san bruno with, you know, bagpiper playing "amazing grace" and a very moving ceremony and speech by the mayor. and, you know, we've come full circle. we're the national transportation safety board a couple weeks ago said that pg&e's line blew up in san bruno last september 9th because the welds in 1956 were done incorrectly, the company didn't have proper records and hadn't done the adequate testing to know what they had down there. just when it looked like that story was kind of being wrapped up and pg&e and state regulators were moving ahead with a lot of reforms and upgrades of the system, there was another explosion in cupertino last week at a condominium complex. 400 homes there. and this was not a large steel transmission line like the line in san bruno. this was a small distribution line made out of plastic. when you

and we're live in cupertino with that story. >> there are a number of investigations trying to sort out exactly what happened here. the fire department, cpuc, national transportation safety board is taking a look. it's not a full blown investigation. and of course, pg&e, after the explosion, found seven leaks on two-inch line feeding this condominium. and pg&e spent the day here going door to door, checking for leaks inside and outside of the complex. on wednesday, one was destroyed after an explosion caused by a leaking line. fire officials say escaped natural gas caught in the garage, it's likely the pilot light ignited explosion and fire. the owner had left 15 mins earlier. a gas service representative or gsr was here about 30 minutes after the explosion. the gas flow was cutoff after another hour and a half. pg&e says excavating to pinch off lines which they did here is faster than closing valves. >> i.think our response is good in this case. our gsr was a first responder on scene. he called for a work crew. and a crew came after he called for them. >> amount of money that consumers

the cause of the natural gas fire that nearly destroyed a condominium in cupertino wednesday is under investigation. but there are indications that the gas leak started sometime wednesday morning. >> she went out to take the dog out for a walk. she came home about 4:00 in the morning. as she was walking up the stairs to her door she did smell some natural gas. >> reporter: fire investigators say the owner of house did not report the leak and left for lunch. that's when the house caught fire. >> because i work from home. and this woman who just lost her home works from home. she is just darn lucky that she decided to go out for lunch. >> reporter: batallion chief says they did not know the house was powered by natural gas until they got home and the door was blown out. they worked to shut down the power at the house, it took more than 90 minutes. but that's what pg & e says that that's how long it takes to do it right. what concerned them is what was found at the house. six other leaks. >> this is something we take very seriously. >> reporter: pg & e is checking all records where gas l
