homestead and cupertino middle school. joining us on the phone is nbc bay area's mary yianne favro. >> reporter: both schools are on lockdown because of reports of a gunman earlier this morning. i do see sheriff's deputies and police officers out on the baseball field of the middle school and also the adjacent field, and it appears that they are spread out sporadically throughout the campus. there are a about a dozen officers at the gas station off homestead and at bernardo. it looks like they're strategizing a plan. there are several patrol cars. it appears there are no suspects in the patrol car, and it still appears that this is an active investigation, looking for someone who is described as a black male possibly wounded and was carrying an ammo bag. so this is what we know so far. i did talk to a neighbor across from cupertino middle school. she tells me she's been here 40 years and she's never seen this level of police activity in her entire time living here on this street. cupertino and homestead high remain locked
