any of the bottles and cans not redeemed, some of those funds go back into local government and curbside programs to fund initiatives at the local level. here in san francisco, talking about the big picture on waste generation and the diversion, 2008 is the most recent number. total generation is 2.4 million tons annually. as you can see on this pie chart, 70% of that is composted. 235,000 tons are composted. in this slide shows how much was generated by sector. as you can see, the commercial sector is a large portion of that. 1.3 million tons. which is why the recycling ordinance has had such a big impact on the diversion rate. the residential sector is 471,000 tons. city government is 321,000 tons generated. interesting, and of note, there is a perception that the curbside program has eliminated the need for recycling centers. the statistics that we have been able to find is that in san francisco there is about an even split between people that put their materials in the blue bins, money that is able to be put back into the operation, and 51% of the people do take them to recycling cen

there really is no plan by the city in order to compensate for the loss of what curbside is not able to achieve. if there is a plan, that plan is being proffered simply, in my opinion, as triage, as the plan has been provided before or materialized since the last two months. this brings us to a point of trying to understand the arguments back portend that hanc recycling center is what some have called anachronistic, that does not help the city meet its goals of its overall recycling program. to the point of that, of the city then realizing that if their goals are needing to be met, then where is the plan that helps us achieve what may be lost? so far, none of that seems to be being developed for well presented. it is patchwork thinking, which i think has been convoluted between the department of the environment and the back and our department. nonetheless, it is an important issue that affects our area of the city, both in the sunset district and in district 5 and in the richmond district through of golden gate park. many people feel that hanc recycling center is an invaluable resour

when people feel that their blue bins are being pilfered, subverting the intention of curbside recycling to see a double counted by those with shopping carts and singularly putting in those bottles and cans. just on the picture to picture, it does not pan out. having that volume based on what date it is able to capture with cost realized, for me i do not see how the math supports the notion that we are going in the right direction at all. >> i do not think it is either or. both of those options have to exist and will continue to exist. there are 10 different options on the street for people with recyclables but they're loading up to take somewhere. there are many options that provide large recycling redemption opportunities. as you mentioned, there are a couple of centers. if someone wants to sell to the market, these vending machines will it a need at a small store for a community member that gathers up apple juice cans or jars, they want to make a few dollars to do something with, they can take it to the reverse vending machine and get those funds and hopefully be within the community
