that's the assessment of one of america's top banking regulators, comptroller of the currency thomas curry. he was on capitol hill today in front of the senate banking committee. >> j.p.m.c. has improved its capital, reserves and liquidity since the financial crisis, and those levels are sufficient to absorb this loss. it is also worth noting that the events at j.p.m.c. do not threaten the broader financial system, and the banks' effort to manage its positions is not creating an unusual risk for contagion. >> tom: curry blamed the bank's loss on weak risk management practices, in j.p. morgan's chief investment office. today's hearing comes as regulators work to finalize the volker rule, which would prevent banks from making risky bets for their own profits. but comptroller curry said it's not clear whether that rule would have prevented the loss. >> tom: president obama is in california tonight while mitt romney is in texas, both attending campaign fundraisers. we take a look at the key swing state of virginia, as we continue our look at the election, jobs and the economy tonight. the unem

curry isn't the only one spinning for the republicans. florida secretary of state kent densner is trying to get access to a federal homeland security data base to double check the citizenship status of the 182,000 voters on the list. republicans are in damage control. there's no doubt about it. local officials are resisting their strong arm tactics and media outlets are covering the story. an analysis by rolling stone shows more than 35,000 eligible voters could be disenfranchised if the purge continues. that's a big number. republicans say this purge is necessary to prevent voter fraud. chairman curry had a hard time coming up with hard examples when he was questioned by thomas roberts. >> how many ineligible voters voted florida? >> well, here we know that an nbc affiliate in the naples/ft. myers area did a study and identified over 100 noncitizens on the voter roles. in that study, they identified one lady that has been registered to vote, she's a noncitizen, registered to vote for 11 years and voted six elections. >> only one alleged

curry, would you have a name of who is in charge of the derivativ derivatives? >> we operate supervision policy where we have a resident examiner in charge of the institution. that individual allocates responsibility for individuals who examine in particular areas of the bank. that can change over time. it can also be the result of someone being brought in. >> do you have a name of who was in charge at the time you were discussing earlier during that time of early april? >> not at the moment who was in charge of looking at the derivatives portfolio. >> mr. chairman, my point is that we have 65 people who are top people according to your testimony and we have this stuff going on. they are on site in order to pay attention and yet i hear from mr. alvarez that we're concerned with changes in the portfolio during that period of time. what are they doing? are they sitting here watching? that's what they were doing the s.e.c. and cftc with mf global while taking money out of customer accounts and not saying anything or raising an alarm and here you are saying you are
