curt, from your vantage point in independence, can you talk about that moment, when truman encounters not only churchill but stalin at the world stage at potsdam? >> it's interesting to think of it in that context and to remember that for harry truman, he was thrust into the presidency very suddenly. he had been a senator for ten years but he had only been vice president for 82 days. and in that time he had only met privately with roosevelt twice. so he really is in the dark about a lot of things. and not only that, it's important to remember that potsdam is harry truman's first real exposure on the world stage. this is his first opportunity to be seen not just by world leaders but by the world itself. and it's a striking contrast, because fdr and winston churchill to some degree are cut from the same cloth. they both came from a similar kind of, you know, world view, perspective, whatever you would want to say. i think fdr was a man that churchill could just relate to through some commonalities. harry truman was someone i don't think churchill was expecting much of. i think he kind o
